About the Author

Featured in Bill Moyer's PBS Special Healing and the Mind, Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD. is executive director at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. He is the founder and former director of the UMMC Stress Reduction Clinic and an associate professor of medicine in the division of preventive and behavioral medicine. Using mindfulness meditation, Kabat-Zinn works to help people reduce stress and deal with chronic pain, and a variety of illnesses, particularly breast cancer. He was a trainer for the 1984 U.S. Men's Olympic Rowing Team and is especially interested in reducing the stress-related problems in the inner city and in prison populations. Kabat-Zinn's books include: Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain and Illness (1991); Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life (1994) and Everyday Blessings: The Inner Work of Mindful Parenting (1997), which was co-authored with his wife, Myla.

I've really enjoyed this 2-disc CD set. With-in the first CD Jon defines mindfulness and its benefits (living moment to moment, awareness as a sixth sense, non-judging, non-striving, letting go, etc), while the second CD consists of six fairly short (10-18min) guided meditations.

There's a certain style of how Jon speaks (and writes, as I'm currently reading his book called Everyday Blessings)...he has these run-on sentences that work for him, as each sentence has such wonderful prose and clarity. And he's personable, and humorous, and thought-provoking. There's a lot of talk during the guided meditations, which can slightly distract the mediator, but for beginners I think this "chatting" may be beneficial to help focus the mind to stay present.

A good introduction to mindfulness. Some great ideas not only about meditation but also about general stress, physical and emotional. The tone of this CD is not as easy as the audio book by the same author called Full Catastrophe Living.

I didn't know what to expect from this because nobody really reviewed the content... I think the first CD is good but he packs a great deal of information into each piece and he speaks quite quickly so it is difficult for me to process much... I always feel I'm behind and trying to understand the first piece but he's already many steps ahead... Since I didn't really understand the background, I feel like the meditations are lost on me... I like the item but I think I would have been better off buying a book and, once I had become comfortable with the material, moving to the meditations.

Too bad Kabat-Zinn didn't hire someone else to speak on the tapes. He's got a lovely voice, warm and compassionate. And I think the content might be okay...except he's mumbling so much and he drops his voice, so I didn't get all of it. But what I got is pretty good, and convinces me that Mindfulness is truly the way to go, not only as an approach for life, but as a focus for excellent meditation. To be present and to let go, to listen to your breathing...or to just be... these are worthwhile goals.
