Review

“A superb book, an important book, a book that breaks new ground. Anyone who is interested in the treatment of ADHD in adults must own this. Rigorous in its research, accessible in its style, convincing in its argument, and novel in its premise, this book keeps its promise of offering a reliable mindfulness prescription. I hugely recommend this book!”—Edward Hallowell, MD, author of Driven to Distraction

“A great many people stand to benefit from Zylowska's eight-step program. Structured to be accessible for its target audience, this supportive guide to managing ADHD through mindfulness offers a clear and detailed program for putting an effective treatment in the hands of consumers and is a great contrast to the many didactic, jargon-laden self-help books available.”—Shelf Awareness

Product Description

Do you:

   • Have trouble paying attention and staying on task?

   • Suffer from disorganization, procrastination, or forgetfulness?
   • Have difficulty with restlessness or trouble managing strong feelings such as anger and frustration?
   • Struggle with self-doubt and difficulty following through?
   • In a way that causes problems in your relationships or your work?

If so, you may have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)—like an estimated 8 million adults in this country. Physician-researcher Dr. Lidia Zylowska has created an 8-step program for using mindfulness practice (attention and awareness training) to overcome the symptoms of ADHD. The program includes practices such as sitting meditation, body awareness, thoughtful speaking and listening, development of self-acceptance, mindful self-coaching, cultivation of a balanced view of thoughts and emotions, and more. Dr. Zylowska educates readers about ADHD, helping them to understand how their ADHD brain works and how they can use mindful awareness to work with their challenges. She also explains how the mindful approach can be combined with other treatments, including medications, to boost self-improvement.

This book is accompanied by an audio program of guided mindfulness exercises for successfully managing ADHD.

I ended up donating this book to the local library as it certainly did not suit our situation. Most people with ADHD have great difficulty focusing on a lot of text and step by step directions much less the follow-through on advice. My spouse would be incapable of sticking with this so-called prescription or doing the exercises. The premise of this book is to re-train the mind however, after having lived with a man with severe ADHD for 25 years, I've come to believe this type of brain functioning cannot be changed significantly without constant external reminders, coaching and counselling, and learning pragmatic ways of organizing ones life. A book and a CD like this, left in the hands of a person with ADHD, will most likely end up in a pile of clutter. In my opinion, ADHD is very definitely a condition found on the autism spectrum and it is far more complex than most experts are willing to admit. Families of people with ADHD are the ones who really know. It is often life long, it hinders normal relationship functioning and it cannot be dealt with by using "mind over matter" techniques. I use mindfulness in my own life but there is no way my husband would benefit from what this book claims.

Dr Zylowska has put together an eight point plan to integrate mindfulness meditation to improve focus and emotional regulation. Her book is grounded in research and is full of references looking at both ADHD and applications of meditation, but does not read at all like a textbook. She has structured her book in a way that has a flow to it, but also is broken up enough so one could read it in pieces- ideal for someone with ADHD who might not be able to digest it all at once. It provides data from studies well blended with personal examples which keep the material from being too abstract or intellectual. Though not a true workbook, it includes written exercises as well as a CD with guided exercises that one can practice on his or her own.

Her eight point plan includes breathing techniques, being aware of both your body and mind, listening skills, regulating thought, actions, and emotions. In each section she spends time presenting the theory and data behind why this element needs to be addressed and gives personal examples. She then moves on to teach how to apply these techniques in a step by step fashion. Much of it is broken into bullet points and sections which make the approach seem less daunting. Then she comes toward the end of the book to discuss integrating the tools presented to pull it together.

As a provider who has treated adults with ADHD, primarily with medications, this new book and approach to treatment seems a great compliment to the field. She does not discourage people to using medications if they decide that this might be helpful, but sees her mindfulness exercises as something one could do as an alternative or additive approach. I think it is great to incorporate new behavioral health tools and enhance one's self care. I welcome more research into this area for many of our mental health conditions.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wise, Holistic Approach, May 15 2012
By Mark Graham - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Mindfulness Prescription for Adult ADHD: An 8-Step Program for Strengthening Attention, Managing Emotions, and Achieving Your Goals (Paperback)
Traditionally, ADHD has either been left untreated or addressed by medication. No doubt, medication is sometimes the best course of action, but if it's possible to avoid it, obviously this is preferable. Given most people who put efforts into meditating and mindfulness training can increase focus and concentration, it makes sense that this should be valuable approach for those with ADHD. Thus, the importance of The Mindfulness Prescription for Adult ADHD.

Some skeptics will scoff that ADHD is a genetic condition, and needs medicine to be corrected. But that is not considering that attention can be strengthened just like exercise can improve fitness (anyone who has meditated regular or especially gone on a retreat can see their focus improve). Dr. Zylowska has the research to back up this assertion. And more importantly, she has and shares a program that has been successful at improving the focus of ADHD sufferers - without the use of drugs.

In her eight-step program, Dr. Lidia Zylowska guides us through non-medicated ways to take more control and improve attention without the use of pills. Based on research done at UCLA geared specifically for those with ADHD and influenced by traditional Buddhist approaches (but stripped of any sectarian or religious trappings) and other positive psychology research, The Mindfulness Prescription for Adult ADHD walks us through a greater understanding of what is going on for ADHD sufferers and offers exercises and an approach that increase our ability to pay attention. This program/approach has the significant side benefit of offering an overall improvement in quality of life. Things like paying closer attention to our senses and emotions, are obviously good for every and anybody. While such exercises shouldn't be expected to have the immediate before-and-after effect a pill will have, over the long haul it can bring us to a similar place without the downsides medication has. Well recommended for anyone interested in working more holistically with their ADHD.
