Book Description

Jan 15 2009
Your mood, thoughts, and emotions can affect your perception of pain and even your ability to heal. In fact, your past life experiences influence your current physical challenges: "your biography influences your biology." While treatments like medication and physical therapy can be enormously beneficial to the body, to maximize pain relief, it's necessary to take advantage of the mind's healing abilities. This book offers a revolutionary new treatment approach, mindfulness-based chronic pain management, that helps you harness your mind's power to quiet your pain and put you in . Mindfulness practice, which includes stationary meditations, movement meditations, mindful art, and other strategies, will help you: • Understand how emotions and thoughts affect physical symptoms • Reverse the debilitating effects of some chronic pain conditions • Prevent pain from becoming chronic or long-term • Lift the anxiety and depression that may accompany chronic pain

5.0 out of 5 stars A guide to getting your life back Feb 25 2009
Format:Paperback
"Dr. Jackie" opens a whole new world of possibilities and hope for the pain sufferer. She makes a credible, compelling case for the mind-body connection---the impact of thought on pain and well-being. From there, her tools for tackling pain are easily grasped and implemented, even for people with limited mobility. This globally respected pain specialist has the warmth and compassion of a woman who is intent on the world discovering the amazing power of the mind to enhance healing and relief.

The book offers fascinating insights into the true origins of many kinds of pain. Your upbringing, whether you are "sensitive" or "stoical", and "body memory" of emotional trauma all factor into today's experience of pain. With knowledge and understanding of the roots of pain that go beyond obvious injury, great relief can follow.

I've used Jackie's guided meditations for several years, and had the great luck of taking a class full of doctors taught by her when she was first sharing her learning with her peers. I've seen first hand the transformative power this had on doctors in the class that suffered from chronic pain themselves; living "mindfully" has improved the quality of my life and I'm delighted that this book, filled with all the proven techniques of her classes, can now help so many people.

From the person looking for help managing stress to the person who has suffered from crippling pain for years, this book is a guide to getting your life back.

I was introduced to "THE MINDFULNESS SOLUTION TO PAIN" written by Dr. Jackie Gardner-Nix while attending one of the many courses she gives on Pain and Anxiety Management. There is also a CD Set which you can order to go along with this book, so you can practice and meditate daily.

The most exciting thing for me while going through this book, a second time since I have taken the course 2 times and currently in another one was to discover the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis. Understanding this relationship to the Fight or Flight response and the longterm result of being in this state frequently, helped me understand why I was having pain in areas which I had no explanation for. This is crucial for me since to relax I need to understand the origins of pain.

I am happy to share that my anxiety with respect to pain has dropped significantly, no panic attacks since that discovery. I highly recommend this book to anyone who suffers with Pain, Anxiety, Fibromyalgia, chronic pain and Panic Attacks..... Excellent book to read!!!
