Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

According to Wansink, director of the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab, the mind makes food-related decisions, more than 200 a day, and many of them without pause for actual thought. This peppy, somewhat pop-psych book argues that we don't have to change what we eat as much as how, and that by making more mindful food-related decisions we can start to eat and live better. The author's approach isn't so much a diet book as a how-to on better facilitating the interaction between the feed-me messages of our stomachs and the controls in our heads. In their particulars, the research summaries are entertaining, like an experiment that measured how people ate when their plates were literally "bottomless," but the cumulative message and even the approach feels familiar and not especially fresh. Wansink examines popular diets like the South Beach and Atkins regimes, and offers a number of his own strategies to help focus on what you eat: at a dinner party, "try to be the last person to start eating." Whether readers take time to weigh their decisions and their fruits and vegetables remains to be seen. (Oct.)

From AudioFile

The two points in this exciting audio are that nearly undetectable differences in daily calories make a big weight difference over time and that many factors influence how much we want to eat in particular settings. Our ancient brains won't limit calories automatically--to inhibit overeating, we have to set up cues, such as the appearance of food or the shape of a plate or package. These cues work better than depending on unreliable feelings, such as a full stomach or tight clothes. Though this might sound tedious or mechanical, the author's excitement will inspire interest and confidence in spite of his less-than-ideal voice quality. Citing many fascinating studies, he offers great strategies for overcoming various patterns of overeating. 1.0 out of 5 stars An interesting magazine article, Jan 31 2008
The basic concept of the book could be adequately covered in a magazine article, and probably has been. Once Wasink has presented the general idea, only the truly helpless would need to have it explained to them in such booklength, repetitious, page-filling detail. I tend to discount the intellectual capabilities of anyone who can't be bothered to write well and ensure their writing is subjected to competent proof-reading. On page 58, Wansink writes "...refrigerator the size of a Suburu" which should read "Subaru". The book is littered with bad grammar, sloppy spelling and poor sentence structure: I realize Wansink is attempting a 'chatty' tone but that need not mean his writing needs to be degraded to such a level that it becomes slovenly. On pages 74 (paras.3 & 4) and page 75 (para.1) he comes to opposite conclusions from the same set of facts which made me wary of everything else he had to say. Either he doesn't really understand what he's doing or his proof reader is so incompetent, he/she didn't realize the error had been made.
I gave up out of boredom about half way through, a thing I have done only four or five times in my six decades of reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not really a diet book!, Dec 3 2007
I really enjoyed this book. There are a lot of studies that the author describes (which could get really boring), but the author sets up the scenarios in very conversational language and makes the outcomes very fun the read about. He then goes on to point out the application of the knowledge gleaned from these experiments is relevant everyday. There are a lot of behviours that you will see in yourself and others around you and it will give you insight and make you laugh.
