Product Description

Amazon.ca

After nearly three decades spent perfecting her multilayered harmony techniques and range of styles as a jingle singer, vocalist for Adiemus and session artist for the likes of George Michael, David Bowie, Tina Turner, and Seal, Miriam Stockley emerges with her debut solo recording, Miriam. An amalgamation of African inspired pop, Celtic folksiness, and classically tinged commercial pop, Miriam is a selection of strongly focused vocals embedded in a tapestry of curiously effective composition. Strings swell and swirl round the singer's potent vocals, reed instruments slice through the smooth flow of keyboards, drums and penny whistle set place and mood. Indicative of what is right with both adult contemporary pop and multiethnic easy listening, Miriam steers clear of easy categorization while remaining familiar enough to be commercially viable. --Paige La Grone

5.0 out of 5 stars Enya With A Brain April 30 2003
By J. Lyon
Format:Audio CD
Ok, Enya's a fine artist, but I find her music repetitive. It didn't take long for me to tire of Orinoco Flow, especially, when it became a Crystal Light commercial.

The music on Miriam actually has CHANGES that don't (usually) repeat, like a tape loop. The compositions are more interesting, to me.

The lyrics contain English, South African languages, some Celtic(sounds like it, anyway), and some "invented" language. Very interesting.

Her voice does not need layers of overdubbing to be interesting. She can sing.

Listen to "Empty Space," "Arcadia," and her beautiful rendition of Peter Gabriel's "Mercy Street." You will be hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Kept Secret Mar 29 2003
Format:Audio CD
I just got this CD today and am listening for the first time. I find it very soothing, but also has the ability to take me someplace else...she is from South Africa and those overtones are evident in a great way. There is also the ethnic-Jewish "The Innocents," which made me feel like I was listening to the soudntrack of a great Holocaust film. A couple of track have some Celtic hints. Also, it stuck me that her voice is somewhat reminiscent of Karen Carpenter's in smoothness and range. This stuff is making me want to take a trip to South Africa...It's a shame that one really has to dig to discover gems like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best kept secret... Mar 29 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I just got this CD and am listening for the first time. I'm not even all the way through but I instantly love this stuff. I've only heard her in Adiemus prior to this, but that was enoough to give her solo stuff a try. No regrets at all. Very soothing, which I like in music, the tendency to take me out of "the moment" and into the artists vision, or my version of that vision! I just realized that her voice could be compared to Karen Carpenter in smoothness and range, but the music itself, more of an "easy listening" genre, but with ethnic overtones: she's from South Africa and there are those overtones, giving this even more interest for me. Except, of course, "The Innocents," dedeicated to Anne Frank, has an ethnic Jewish feel, making me feel like I'm listening to the soundtrack of great Holocaust film.
I'd like to know where the Grammy committee was here: she should at least be nominated for something. This stuff isn't overly commercial: it's too bad that finding these gems seems to be a lot of work!
