Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Those for whom the Allegri Miserere stands as a choral music icon will find this recording something of a shock. Getting on for a century after Gregorio Allegri penned his masterpiece in Rome in 1638, his work was emulated by Tommaso Bai, maestro of the St Peter's Basilica choir. To cut the story short, Bai's and Allegri's Misereres were eventually melded into a composite work for performance in the Sistine Chapel. A copy of this extraordinary hybrid was preserved in the Vatican archive after the papal choir was dissolved in 1870. From this, Hugh Keyte produced the performing edition heard here, incorporating the dramatic style and expression known to have been employed--including seemingly bizarre portamenti which at first seem like a joke.

For some, this musical mongrel may induce a mild queasiness--for others it will be fascinating, caressed as it is by the immaculate singing of the Ensemble William Byrd. The show is stolen by soprano Catherine Greuillet, who soars effortlessly into the stratosphere. Too ravishing? Too feminine? The hard-hearted may think so. The remaining Misereres are pleasant enough excursions into unfamiliar territory, but many will keep flicking back to the Allegri/Bai to check they heard correctly. --Andrew Green

Chronique amazon.fr

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing allegri, Oct 8 2002
Ce commentaire est de: Miserere (Audio CD)
According to the liner notes, the Anglican version of the allegri "is now known to bear minimal resemblance to anything ever heard in the sistine chapel. Here we sing the genuine article: the allegri miserere in its early 19th century form, prepared from a long overlooked and once-secret manuscript in the Vatican library"
This miserere is actually a composite between allegri's and one composed by another sistine maestro; Tommaso Bai.
The result is quite startling upon first hearing for those acquainted with the Anglican version, but definitely merits equal admiration after repeated listening.
Generally the Allegri version remains intact but its relative purity and simplicity is juxtaposed with sections of chromatic and emotive display more in the skein of gesualdo! The monotone chants alternate with verses of intense word painting with singers sometimes even sighing in affect. The showstopping abellimenti (leaps etc)also reach new heights of virtuosity and ornamentation. But rest assured all you allegri fans out there, your piece has not been desecrated! The new additions never disturb the overall sacred import of the original, they are always tasteful and faithful to the text despite their distinctly neapolitan flavour.
The rest of the cd presents some rare and pleasing neapolitan settings of the miserere, and are worth listening to as well.
The singing is absolutely flawless both individually and in ensemble. Particularly the soli in the miserere! They always blend seamlessly whilst being perfectly delineated. The period strings also sound sweet, not the usual "dryness". There is also a very beautiful and sombre organ that's employed discreetly in the neapolitan settings.
The recording quality is outstanding and in the nice acoustic of the Fontmorigny abbey in France.

I'm not going to review this record in the conventional sense. After all, I made it. But I would just like to let you know that the record has been re-issued by Naive and should be generally available from your usual sources very soon.

I would have preferred to communicate this info to this site another way, but there doesn't seem to be one.

If you have no luck finding it, contact me by email at Grabyrdy@gmail.com
