Sibylla Forstenström is the daughter of a rich but insensitive merchant and his wife. After a depression and an unwanted pregnancy she flees as an 18 year old girl from her family and the institution where she is kept. She starts to live as a homeless person and is capable of taking rather good care of herself for 15 years. But then things go wrong: she is wrongly accused of murdering a businessman and while she hides from the police three other murders follow. In the end she is capable of unravelling the true cause of these murders with the help of 15 year old Patrik, who she meets when hiding in the attic of a secondary school.

This was a very entertaining introduction to the work of yet another excellent Swedish author of thrillers. Definitely worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Fans of Psychological Suspense, May 20 2012
This review is from: Missing (Mass Market Paperback)
Best Scandinavian author I have read! I loved this book. This novel is not as dark and violent as is the trend with so many other new authors coming out of Scandinavia. Karin Alvtegen uses psychological suspense over violence to tell a good story. This is the second book I have read by her and I'm really pleased that each book so far, is a standalone suspense novel(at least as far as I'm aware). Too many authors write series books (probably spurred on by their publishers), and I'm tired of always having to read books in a certain order, just so you don't miss a reference from something that happened in an earlier book, or at worst, have the ending of an earlier book completely spoiled, when the author refers back to that case. The sign of great storyteller is one that keeps you reading obsessively, which Karin Alvtegen definately accomplishes. I look forward to reading many more of her books.

Maybe it's just a really, really bad translation. But this is perhaps the most poorly written and plotted book I've ever read. Ridiculous back story to the main character, ridiculous plot, ridiculously simplistic narration, and ridiculous ending with a killer dropped into the last 2 chapters. Yes, one adjective is all I'll waste on this review. It was summer, the only other books I had around were too heavy to take to the beach, so I took this one. At least the lake was warm and the sun was hot. Otherwise my time would have been completely wasted. I only gave this one star because Amazon won't let me give zero stars.
