Product Description

The Star Kingdom of Manticore and the Republic of Haven have been enemies for Honor Harrington's entire life, and she has paid a price for the victories she's achieved in that conflict. And now the unstoppable juggernaut of the mighty Solarian League is on a collision course with Manticore. The millions who have already died may have been only a foretaste of the billions of casualties just over the horizon, and Honor sees it coming. She's prepared to do anything, risk anything, to stop it, and she has a plan that may finally bring an end to the Havenite Wars and give even the Solarian League pause. But there are things not even Honor knows about. There are forces in play, hidden enemies in motion, all converging on the Star Kingdom of Manticore to crush the very life out of it, and Honor's worst nightmares fall short of the oncoming reality. But Manticore's enemies may not have thought of everything after all. Because if everything Honor Harrington loves is going down to destruction, it won't be going alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mission of Awesome., Mar 24 2010
This review is from: Mission Of Honor (Hardcover)
It's been far too long since the last main series novel. Weber needs to stop pursuing several series at once and finish them one at a time; 4 1/2 years is way too long. It might help if he stopped making them door stoppers. But I digress. It's here, and that's what matters.

Ever since we learned just how involved Mesa has been, I've been waiting for the great Manticore-Haven alliance to start, and I wasn't disappointed. The first great curbstomp of the Manticore/Solarian conflict wasn't too shabby either. Everything else progressed smoothly, but as I alluded, he is creating too many plot points to fulfill easily (or quickly), and letting his editor immunity get the better of him in making this a doorstopper. But I've heard that he plans for the series to be 15 books, and if this is #12 i expect the last 3 to be a wild ride of threads coming together.

To my fellow reviewers; chill. Cartoon, the ARC(advance reader copy) has been on sale at Bean's site since early February. If you had actually read Kevin's review you might have realized that. It has typos and errors, but it is still the book. Pay attention. Kevin, kyle, have you been in hibernation since you read At All Costs and completely missed the two side novels where almost 'everything' you complain about was set up? Chapters of material both in this and the two previous side novels have been spent on the Mesan development of new drives and their preparation for what you call a "deus ex machina", but is nothing of the sort. If you missed something that big, I feel no need to address your other mistakes, like completely misreading the Queen's character growth.

I'm giving a 4 star book 5 stars to counteract the lack of thought by my fellow reviewers.

2.0 out of 5 stars This series has jumped the shark, Feb 16 2010
This review is from: Mission Of Honor (Hardcover)
(this review based on the ARC sold by Baen in Feb-2010)

As much as I loved the first 5-6 books, this series has finally gone off the rails. The scale has just gotten so huge that the majority of the books are now just moving all the various universe bits forward, with little or no focus on the main character. This book also had the second stupidly arbitrary plot twist of the series, which was the final nail in the coffin. Some details (minor spoilers):
- Honor spends all of her time in meetings, away from any and all action. Yay for the hero.
- the outcome of the only space combat is known well in advance by everyone, including the characters
- way too much time is spent moving political plots forward. This is no longer just limited to Marty/Peep perspectives, now you also have Solly and Mesans as well
- there is a totally arbitrary thing that happens that cripples the Manty war effort. It is basically a reverse Deus Ex Machina that is completely unexpected, and unable to be detected or stopped. I can only guess this was to added to ratchet up tension, but it comes totally out of the blue and took me completely out of the story
- the massive Solly invasion/combat that the whole story builds towards... doesn't happen in this book. This is the first book in the series that doesn't end on a dramatic combat resolution, and just sort of ends abruptly.
- (spoiler) the queen abandons her long held hatred for the Peeps and agrees to work with them on a 'what the hell' (literally).
All in all, terribly disappointed in the direction this series is going. My guess is that since Honor didn't die in the last book (as was the original plan, from what I've heard), this book had to refocus the series on the new enemy to give the series someplace to go. It kinda succeeds, but makes me lose my interest in seeing it go there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intense as usual!, July 12 2010
By
Gale Sturrock (Surrey, British Columbia Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mission Of Honor (Hardcover)
I don't believe Mr. Kent has reread any of Weber's books or he would have known what was coming in this book. All the information and signs were available so how could he not know unless he is a skimmer reader. Sorry, but I have reread most of my favourite books at least 20 times; how else can you pick up suttle details. Mr. Weber has combined our hopes for a "future perfect" with our past history and come up with what can only be described as a "possible future reality". Keep up the great work; but - yes please, write a little faster.
