"Entertaining, well-executed, and likely to circulate feverishly as soon as it hits the shelf, this first installment in a graphic novel series should have scores of devoted fans in no time." — School Library Journal

"Parker combines sharp characterization with breakneck plotting that should keep aspiring space cadets turning pages furiously." — Publishers Weekly

"Creative character design, vivid color, plenty of excitement, and a galaxy-wide story make this a lively, fun one." — AVClub.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Can Missile Mouse Save a Planet from Slavery?, Mar 17 2011
By
Nicola Manning (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
(HALL OF FAME)    (TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Missle Mouse #2: Rescue on Tankium3 (Paperback)
Reason for Reading: next in the series.

Missile Mouse is chasing a fugitive on the capital planet, has a bad run-in with the robot guards, is attacked by Blazing Bat and after mass destruction to the docks brings his man back to the GSA. Turns out the fellow was under the influence of a mind altering device which made him the living slave of the one controlling the device. Missile Mouse is sent with the victim back to his home planet along with a team of Security Robots, one of whom becomes his new partner, Agent 44. Here they find the evil King Bognarsh who has captured all able-bodied men and taken them to the other side of the planet to work as slaves in his mine. It's up to Missile Mouse to save the people of this planet but at the same time he has a bounty hunter, Blazing Bat, out for his head, literally.

I love Missile Mouse! This pure science fiction graphic story takes some common science fiction elements and rolls with them on a junior level without becoming a farce or a superhero story. Missile Mouse is kind of an anti-hero. He doesn't respect authority, does things *his* way, often makes a mess of things, but always gets his guy. It's hard not to find him lovable in certain ways. While Missile Mouse may be a rogue he is not stupid, he learns from his mistakes, and from this we see the real heart of the beast inside. The story is quite exciting. Typical of any sci-fi cartoon or TV episode with its battles, high tech gadgetry and moments of humour but the core of this book is MM's relationship with Agent 44. What starts as a commander who has nothing but disdain for his subordinate turns into a true crime fighting/military partnership where one must have the other's back at all times, where trust becomes an instinct. A wonderful story for only the second book in this series. Looking forward to what Book 3 brings. The ending here sets up how the next book will start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Planetary praise and galactic gratitude are in order: more Missile Mouse!, Dec 30 2010
By John Call - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Missle Mouse #2: Rescue on Tankium3 (Paperback)
My 8-year old son and I both enjoyed Missile Mouse #1. The story, action, and artwork that captivated our attention in the first book have carried over to the second installment of Missile Mouse "Rescue on Tankium3". The story stands alone, so don't worry about missing out on the fun if you didn't read the first Missile Mouse book (but my recommendation is to get both books for twice the reading pleasure). The main plot involves the Cosmic Cola empire (reminiscent of "the Spice must flow"). As in the first book, one of the subplots is how Missile Mouse works with his partner--developing trust at the beginning and then holding true to that trust in the heat of battle. Missile Mouse sees himself as a Lone Ranger, but his partner Robot 44 goes above and beyond the Galactic Security Agency programming to ensure Missile Mouse is able to save the day. It would be great if future books could further develop the relationship between Robot 44 and Missile Mouse. I envision Robot 44 being cast along the lines of Data in Star Trek the Next Generation or R2D2 in Star Wars--the Tin Man that embodies what is best about humanity. The last ten pages of the book are devoted to a guide to the Missile Mouse universe. There is enough extra detail that your young reader will spend extra time learning about the ins-and-outs of Missile Mouse's jet pack, Robot 44 internals, a Tankium home, and more.

A treat to read and a pleasant diversion from the usual diet of chapter books, the Missile Mouse series is recommended for boys interested in science fiction and adventure. We love to read this together, my son reading all the Missile Mouse and narrator lines and I reading the other characters' lines (I try to do the characters in different voices to elicit laughs or groans).

The binding, pages, and color of the first paperback printing are excellent quality. The thicker covers and glossy pages will survive many trips to and from school or library in a crowded book bag.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, educational graphic novel for kids, Mar 9 2011
By GraphicNovelReporter.com - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Missle Mouse #2: Rescue on Tankium3 (Paperback)
he second installment of Jake Parker's Missile Mouse series, Rescue on TANKIUM3, is an action-packed graphic novel adventure with surprisingly serious undertones. With its emphasis on agents, robots, and alien worlds, this is a title that will appeal particularly to elementary-age boys.

This volume follows Missile Mouse as he tries to take down King Bognarsh, who is using mind control devices to enslave an entire race of beings. Missile Mouse reluctantly teams up with a robot agent known as Robot 44; together they rescue and befriend one of the ex-slaves, Lasukus, who introduces them to his peace-loving tribe. Throughout the volume, the three are constantly thwarted by a particularly sinister side-villain, the Blazing Bat.

Missile Mouse is a character highly suitable as a role model for younger readers. He is calm and collected, but he is still willing to sacrifice his safety for the sake of helping those who cannot help themselves. Missile Mouse battles fairly heavy stakes in this volume, including the mind control of an entire species. In the face of these stakes, Missile Mouse remains brave and true, fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves.

Amazingly, Missile Mouse is also a character who admits his mistakes, a trait that is not often found in adventure stories for children. This particular trait comes into play in Missile Mouse's friendship with Robot 44, as originally Missile Mouse does not trust robot agents. As his experiences with the robots change his thinking, we come to question whether or not robots can be worth as much as a mouse, or as any living creature.

The reading level in Missile Mouse is geared a bit more toward the older-elementary range. Likewise, the action and subject matter of this volume may be a bit too intense for younger children. However, this volume provides a great opportunity to expose kids to slightly more difficult vocabulary while they are immersed in the colorful art and heart-stopping action of the work. Children will most likely understand more difficult words from their context, and they will be having so much fun that they will not even notice that they are learning.

The art in Missile Mouse is colorful and suitable for a story that is this action-filled. The colors are vivid during action sequences, and the characters (including the robots) are drawn to reflect the emotion of the situation. Children of all ages will be drawn to the familiarity of a mouse as a main character, while older children will appreciate the fact that Missile Mouse is a typical but likable action character.

Missile Mouse is highly recommended for children 8 and up.
