It's clear that the full series was crafted from beginning to end before the first book was written. Everything ties together brilliantly throughout.
This is an intriguing world where monsters roam the nights, beasts attack cities and supernatural forces have a hand in it all. The writing is clever and even the most creative reader is unlikely to predict the direction of the stories as they unfold.
The characters are what makes this story stand above much modern writing. Everyone has a history, everone has a unique personality and it's all done without often dull character exposition. The reader learns about the characters as they live their lives, through the natural course of the plot.
I loved every aspect of this series and I hope you treat yourself to the adventure that is this trilogy.
I will not spoil this review with a plot summary - it will not do the novel justice. Characters are complex and interesting (with flaws and all and excellent development), the plot is fantastic and moves at a great pace, the world setting is well built with a new magical system (or two or three), a meaningful history (the evil lord Ruler has already won a 1000 years ago and now must be overthrown), and a defined political structure.
Unlike many authors, Sanderson does not fall into the trap of falling in love with his characters and is willing to use major character deaths for the betterment (and realism aspect) of the story. Characters use magic as a tool, but are not all powerful... Magic does not solve everything, but it certainly helps.
The first book in the trilogy works as a standalone novel so if you are unsure about the trilogy buy that first. I'd advise you to buy all three at once.... I'm already in the midst of reading the follow-up Alloy of Law.
Great action scenes and storytelling!

Mistborn is a very good read; the magic system is original and very different from anything I've read elsewhere, and I've read a lot of sci-fi/fantasy. Read morePublished 4 months ago by Ualaa
