Book Description

May 1 1995
Even readers who don't normally enjoy Arthurian legends will love this version, a retelling from the point of view of the women behind the throne. Morgaine (more commonly known as Morgan Le Fay) and Gwenhwyfar (a Welsh spelling of Guinevere) struggle for power, using Arthur as a way to score points and promote their respective worldviews. The Mists of Avalon's Camelot politics and intrigue take place at a time when Christianity is taking over the island-nation of Britain; Christianity vs. Faery, and God vs. Goddess are dominant themes. Young and old alike will enjoy this magical Arthurian reinvention by science fiction and fantasy veteran Marion Zimmer Bradley. --BonnieBouman

1.0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTMENT FROM A HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BOOK Dec 20 2003
By M. Ryan
Format:Paperback
I read this book a number of years ago based on rave reviews by a number of my friends. I was unable to finish it. I slogged
through 3/4ths of it before giving up. It was quite awhile ago so I can't go into too many specifics but i do remember flat,
unsympathetic, un-likable characters. The women all seemed to view themselves as victims. Strong women, even if victimized
usually don't have the time to wallow in self pity as these characters seemed to. It all became too irritating & honestly too boring
for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Overrated tripe Jan 3 2000

Format:Paperback
The popularity of this book continues to amaze me. Like many books written to make a particular point, the author overreaches and undermines her purpose by using a heavy hand. If you want a more balanced Arthur, try Parke Godwin's Firelord.

The reaction of the author's fans to the title of this review should clarify the problem with the book.

MS. Bradley is one of the most repugnant writers of our time! I read some of the other reviews on this page, the ones praising this hideous book. How easily some people are led down the wrong path! Just because it's in a book, doesn't mean it's 100% true. Ms. Bradley certainly tries hard to milsead the reader into the FALSE belief that the alternative history she lays down in here is historical truth. I, and many other serious scholars scholars of ancient Celtic mythology and Arthurian lore are laughing at the fact that some of her readers see this book as "a retelling of Arthurian legend from the womens' point of view". Nothing could be further from the truth! Yes, the ancient Celts did worship a "mother goddess" of sorts, but she was by no means the supreme deity of the Celtic people, in Britain or elsewhere. Indeed, in his Gallic Wars, Caesar says that they revere a male god called "Dis-pater" as their creator. Certainly, there were a "mother goddess" and a "horned god" in the Celts' mythology, but they weren't the only deities.

I don't read two many books more then once, but I could read this one

very refreshing.
