Book Description

Jan 20 2011 Outspoken Authors (Book 5)
Jerry Cornelius—Michael Moorcock’s fictional audacious assassin, rockstar, chronospy, and possible Messiah—is featured in the first of two stories in this fifth installment of the Outspoken Author series. Previously unpublished, the first story is an odyssey through time from London in the 1960s to America during the years following Barack Obama's presidency. The second piece is a political, confrontational, comical, nonfiction tale in the style of Jonathan Swift and George Orwell. An interview with the author rounds out this biting, satirical, sci-fi collection.

Review

“A major novelist of enormous ambition.”  —Washington Post

“Moorcock is a throwback to such outsized 19th-century novelistic talents as Dickens and Tolstoy.”  —Locus Magazine

"The nonlinear narrative skips along like a scratched DVD, but never loses sight of the central concern: how does the tension between remembering and forgetting sustain us through the stress of unending disasters? Also included are . . . a short reminiscence of Moorcock's life from the 40s to the 90s, and a wonderfully insightful interview . . . conducted by editor Terry Bisson." —Publishers Weekly (April 4, 2011)

"[This book includes] an appropriately baffling and non-linear Jerry Cornelius short story; the essay "My Londons," a clear-eyed reflection on Moorcock's life in that most iconic of cities; and an interview with Moorcock conducted by series editor Terry Bisson." —Austin Statesman (April 4, 2011)

4.0 out of 5 stars "Outspoken Author" Michael Moorcock April 4 2011
By Paul Brooks - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Modem Times 2.0" is the fifth book in the series "Outspoken Authors" published by PM Press. Each book features a mixture of fictional work, interviews, essays and bibliography. In addition to Michael Moorcock the other authors in the series are Terry Bisson, Kim Stanley Robinson, Eleanor Arnason, Gary Phillips and Ursula Le Guin.
"Modem Times 2.0" features a reprinted novella, an essay from the London Times, an interview and a bibliography.

Over the years I have read a number of Moorcock's books starting with the unauthorized Lancer "Elric" paperbacks in the mid 60's. I purchased this book primarily for the interview and the bibliography and was not disappointed. Curious readers of speculative fiction not acquainted with the authors featured may find this volume and the others of interest. I suspect the market for these volumes will be readers already familiar with the writers body of works.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this book in the Barnes and Nobel bookstore here in New Hampshire. Glad to see small press books receiving shelf space in the mega bookstores.
3.0 out of 5 stars Some Interesting Snacks from Legendary Writer Aug 25 2012

Michael Moorock ranks as one of the most versatile British writers of the post-war period. His works range from sci-fi, fantasy, satire, more literary works, alternate histories and essays. "Modem Times 2.0" shows a little of Moorcock's range though readers who are not familiar with his words and multiverse will be hard pressed to understand the title story which features Jerry Cornelius who the writer uses as the avatar of his age--be it the 1960s or the current one. While readers who are fans of the Cornelius books and stories will enjoy "Modem Times," I suspect the non-linear nature of the story and too many unfamiliar characters who pop out of nowhere with no explanation will baffle newcomers to Jerry Cornelius and his worlds. The book also includes an essay as Moorcock ponders his hometown of London and there is an interview with the writer that is excellent and insightful. Moorcock fans will enjoy it though, if you only know him through the Elric books, you might want to look at the Cornelius Quartet before tackling this book. It's simply not for everyone, even casual readers of Moorcock's works.

2.0 out of 5 stars unreadable Jun 28 2011
By G. DeRome - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
While I am a big fan of the Pyat novels, I found Modem Times 2.0 to be unreadable. It's only 79 pages, but I gave up half-way through. It is an installment in the Jerry Cornelius stories which I haven't read. But I don't think that's the problem. The novella jumps around from time-space to time-space in short 1/2 or 1-page chapters. You never know where or when you are (Cornelius is a time-traveler) or who any of the characters are. I find it very prententious and self-indulgent. I assume the author knows where Cornelius is at any given point, but he hasn't clued the rest of us in on it. Never figured out the point of the whole exercise. Maybe the author is just bored with writing linear, readable stories.

The book also contains an 8-page reminiscence on the London the author grew up in; enjoyable, and a 26-page interview with the author which is informative and enjoyable.

Be forewarned.
