Product Description

Review

"Modern Minimal is perfect for anyone who has been admiring the bold modern quilts that use mainly solid fabrics, but been too timid to attempt one. With a wonderful take on graphic quilts, author Alissa Haight Carlton helps readers get over their fear of negative space on a quilt top. There are chapters on both white negative space and colorful negative space. Her projects feature stylish yet deceivingly simple quilt patterns. With an entire chapter dedicated to improvisational piecing, readers learn how to master the art of randomness. As an added bonus, each of the 20 patterns has two suggestions from Carlton on how to quilt your piece. For those interested in graphic quilts, this is a must-have book."

--MODERN patchwork

Join the modern quilt movement and make simple, yet boldly graphic quilts for your home. Remember that old adage "Less is more?" These quilts make a strong impact with less complicated designs and fewer, less busy fabrics.
--Scrap Quilts, Summer 2012

The Modern Quilt movement is taking hold and is getting the lion’s share of credit for bringing younger quilters into the world of quilting. Alissa Haight Carlton’s book “Modern Minimal” presents instructions for creating 20 beautiful, colorful, graphic and modern quilts. If you have wanted to try your hand at creating a “modern” style quilt I highly recommend you start here. Modern quilts are different in that they are not built block by block as in a traditional quilt. Alissa’s method of imagining the quilt as a whole and using just a few yards of beautifully colored solid fabric allows for fast cutting and easy assembly. These type of quilts provide greater areas for quilting and the book cov- ers both machine and hand quilting instructions. Beginner stitchers will achieve a sense of instant satisfaction because these quilts are put together using the 1⁄4 inch seam allowance and straight edge stitching. No complicated and often frustrating curves, triangle and other shapes to deal with. The basic quilt instructions included everything you need to know to make a quilt, from tools to how to assemble the quilt sandwich and finally quilting your quilt and adding the binding. Each project provides easy to under- stand cutting and stitching instructions as well as two suggestions on different way to quilt the piece. Give this book to someone you know just starting out or treat yourself and add a new quilt style to your quilting arsenal. --The Applique Sociey; 07/10/12

22 Project, perfect for solid fabrics. Straight, strip or improvisational piecing allows you to relax and enjoy the quilting process and create lots of negative space for quilting. Two options are offered with each pattern.
--Modern Quilts Unlimited; November 2012

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to make! April 7 2012
Format:Paperback
I own four quilt books and this one is the best one! I have already made one quilt from her book and the directions were easy to follow.

I was also impressed at how fast this quilt was to make. It is exciting to finish a quilt in a week instead of months. The quilts are also beautiful with a mix of different sizes including baby quilts. I wanted quilts that fit into my modern aesthetic and these quilts were perfect. Must buy for the modern home.

3.0 out of 5 stars nothing new May 23 2012

This is not a bad book, but it's a disappointment. There are 20 quilts, all pretty much like the one on the cover. There are detailed instructions about cutting and layout, which really aren't necessary since the designs are pretty straight forward. I was hoping for more insights into color, creativity, process and such rather than a basic "cookbook." Because these quilts have so much plain fabric, the quilting is a big part of the piece. The author claims to have done all of these on her home machine, and while I'm not doubting her, I do know from my own experience quilting many quilts on my home machine that I couldn't get the results she does. Yet she gives no instruction or tips about quilting large quilts or designs on a home machine. It wasn't worth the price of the book for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful modern quilts for every skill level Mar 6 2012
By Alissa R. Wright - Published on Amazon.com

Modern Minimal is a must-buy for any modern quilter, or traditional quilter interested in expanding his or her aesthetic to incorporate more solids, or just more of a modern sensibility into their work. This is a beautifully designed book with excellent instructions and diagrams and absolutely gorgeous photography. I especially loved how Alissa Haight Carlton shows how each of the pieces will look with different types of quilting. It reminds you of what a huge difference the actual quilting can make in the overall look of a quilt, particularly quilts like the one in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Immediate Inspiration Mar 6 2012

I preordered this book, and was SO excited when Amazon sent it to me earlier than I expected! I spent that first evening poring over every quilt, every dynamic, and every detail.

I was working on a quilt at the time, with a specific quilting design in mind, but after reading about one of her quilts, I changed my mind and quilted it differently...and I LOVE IT!!!

This book is great for beginners and experienced quilters around the world. I can only imagine how my own quilting and quilt style will improve now that I have this book. And I'm not really one to buy a lot of quilt books! I will definitely recommend it to all my quilting friends. :)

Thank you, Alissa, for inspiring me and encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone and create something beautiful that I love!
