5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Readable, Informative, Brilliant, Jun 14 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Times: World from the Twenties to the Nineties (Revised Edition) (Paperback)
A brilliant narrative connecting the seminal history-making dots of the 20th century. Highly enligthening analysis of totalitarianisms and political myths--some of which are still bedeviling our 21st century. Revealing snapshots of major political personalities--Lenin, Nehru, etc.

A book not to be missed if you want to be informed about the historical forces that are shaping our world today. Plus, Paul Johnson's prose is superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Superb Analysis, May 13 2002

This review is from: Modern Times: World from the Twenties to the Nineties (Revised Edition) (Paperback)
Johnson does more to help us understand the failure of the modern world than any work I have read. He even manages to make 'ecomomics' interesting by placing it in its long term social context. His case is cumulative, interdiciplinary, and massively detailed without becoming tedious. Even if one should dispute Johnson's overall evaluation of an individual figure, the pattern of evidence is overwhilming that man cannot be good without moral absolutes. Despite this being a work of history, and not theology, the theological implications are not far removed from the thoughtful reader's conscience.

4.0 out of 5 stars great book, NOT A REVISION, April 25 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Times: World from the Twenties to the Nineties (Revised Edition) (Paperback)
I was under the impression that Johnson was going to append this book every decade, but the text of Modern Times has gone unrevised this edition. It would be just as well for you to save 8 or 10 dollars and buy the 1991 edition-- it is exactly the same.
