Album Description

Some time in the last few years Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers took a left turn. Maybe it was when Petty woke up in the night with the idea of reuniting his first band, Mudcrutch, to cut the album they never got a chance to make back in the early 70's. Maybe it was when the Heartbreakers assembled the mammoth multi-disc 'The Live Anthology,' which detailed thirty years of concerts. Maybe it was when they gave all their home movies, outtakes and live footage to director Peter Bogdanovich to create the Grammy-winning four-hour career documentary 'Runnin Down A Dream.' There have been side projects and experiments since the band last went into the studio to cut a new Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers album.

With 'MOJO,' they have taken their recent freedom and experimentation to heart. They have gone off the reservation and all signs indicate they aren't coming back.

The first thing that hits you about 'MOJO' is that the spirit of the Mudcrutch sessions has carried on with the Heartbreakers. This is the sound of a band playing together in a room not a studio - facing each other, all singing and playing at the same time. The music is alive, with no overdubs or studio trickery. What you hear is what they created on the spot at that time.

Tom Petty says, 'With this album, I want to show other people what I hear with the band. 'MOJO' is where the band lives when it's playing for itself.'

As for the songs, 'MOJO' showcases a wide variety of American music from rock 'n' roll to country and both electric and acoustic blues. And then there are the images in Petty's lyrics which slip in on the melodies and set up a home in your head: The barefoot girl in the high grass chewing on a stick of sugar cane, the run-in with the law that begins when a carload of buddies decide to party with the motel maids, and the hilariously audacious idea of opening an album with an electric blues rocker about Thomas Jefferson's love affair with Sally Hemings. Petty would probably chuck a rock at anyone who called him a poet, but he sure is a southern writer of humor and sensitivity.

'MOJO' has juice and guts but it also has some sweet balladry for the slow dancers and even a wacked-out reggae number that is unlike anything that the Heartbreakers have done before. It's the kind of album nobody's supposed to be able to make anymore. It got here just in time.

4.0 out of 5 stars MOJO WAS WORTH THE 8 YEAR WAIT, Sep 20 2010

This review is from: Mojo (Audio CD)
Tom Petty and his band, The Heartbreakers, released their first album in 1976 and as good as that one was, and as good as the follow up album released a year and a half later was, it was album number 3 ("Damn The Torpedoes") that cemented his reputation as one of America's roots rock and roll troubadours, alongside Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne and Bob Dylan, to name a few. This is album number 12 for Tom and the band; he also released a number of solo albums over the years.
The first track that was streamed on Tom's website was "First Flash of Freedom"; it's very much an early 1970's flashback style song, almost like Pink Floyd meets The Doors. It's a great song. Tom released "The Last DJ" album 8 years ago, which was an attack on the level of corporate greed in the music industry and how the days of each radio DJ selecting their own music was pretty much a thing of the past. Have you ever noticed that you can hear the same song (usually by Pitbull, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus or the Black Eyed Peas) repeated within a 2-hour radio window on a certain radio station here on the Island? That's the computerized corporate song list at play. I mention this because it shines a window on what type of artist Tom Petty is, he pretty much gave up on mainstream radio (although quality stations followed him) and concentrated on the fans directly, giving them access to his music when they wanted it. That's why you can find the videos for "Good Enough", "I Should Have Known It", "Jefferson Jericho Blues" and "Something Good Coming" featured on his You Tube channel. They all have a bluesy influence, yet "I Should Have Known It" is the pick of the litter, with its Southern, dirty water-like sound, making it the best cut in this collection. "Running Man's Bible" has a real Dire Straits-like flair to it and "The Trip To Pirate's Cove" is like a cross between Blue Rodeo and Bob Dylan. Both songs are excellent. The Reggae slant on "Don't Pull Me Over" is a real treat for the ears and the band dips it's toes again in the Dire Straits waters.
It's been 8 years since Tom recorded an album with The Heartbreakers, and to quote Rolling Stone magazine, "It was worth the wait. "Mojo" is dynamite". However, this is not an album for everyone-if you like Springsteen, Dylan, Dire Straits, Blue Rodeo or basically any roots rock and roll band, this should be right up your alley. After 34 years, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers are still rocking strong. In 34 years time, will anyone even remember who Rihanna or Miley Cyrus were? I don't think so. That's testament the quality and craftsmanship of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers music. Their "Mojo" is still working.

Good rock 'n'roll, blues ans a reggea song, Petty and The Heartbreaker made their best effort to date.
