I love my mom's family wall calendar, but...

I absolutely love my Mom's Family Wall Calendar. I buy one every year, and rely on it to keep everyone's schedules organized. We rarely miss an appointment or meeting when we use the wall calendar religiously. With our busy schedules, I needed something portable that accomplished the same job. I used to be able to track all of that on my palm pilot, but the handheld, smartphone versions of those programs are just too cumbersome to use. Based on reviews, descriptions, and images of previous Mom's Family Desk Calendars, I was expecting a smaller version of the wall calendar, or at least something with plenty of room and spaces for organizing multiple schedules. And of course, I enjoy Sandra Boynton's cartoons.
Sadly, that's not what the 2013 version provides. One entire page for the week is taken up by a cartoon, and the other is split into the week with one small rectangle for Mom's schedule, and one small rectangle for everyone else. I just couldn't wait for this calendar, and now I'm sad I ever spent money on this - I got better use and more space from my old, cheap, academic calendar bought on clearance at a local department store. This is not your typical Mom's Family Calendar with a column devoted to each family member, or even enough space to record appointments and times. I certainly won't be buying future versions unless it more closely resembles the wall version.

Fun and Functional, but could use improvement

I've got 4 children at home involved in scouts, dance and soccer and this planner helps to keep everyone's schedules straight. When a child's event needs some action on my part (beyond playing taxi) I write it in the mom column, then draw an arrow pointing to the corresponding event in the family column. The spaces are large enough to write in, even when all 4 kids have an activity on the same day. I would have liked some space for a to-do list on each week's page. Instead they are found at the back of the planner. You can remove them and use them to mark the current week.
The planner comes with cute stickers, but not nearly enough. There are only 5 "dance class" stickers - my daughter has 5 dance classes a week! I just use them when she is making up a class or the schedule has changed for whatever reason. Also, only 3 "doctor" stickers, etc. I would like to see more.
This planner does not have tabbed pages, so I used some removable flags and wrote the months on them. I actually have this complaint about the last planner I used, too. I wish publishers would add these!
Finally, as someone else mentioned, the paper is semi-gloss which makes a pretty presentation, but causes writing to show through to the back of the page (the next week's illustration) and make an impression of your writing onto the next week's page.
Overall, this is a good planner and the Boynton illustrations are fun, as always. Some minor changes - more appointment stickers, tabbed pages, more appropriate paper- would make it my perfect planner.

I bought this planner because I like Sandra Boynton's illustrations. It did not disappoint on that front! The left pages contain full page illustrations. They're fun even if they do make the planner thicker. There are handy pockets inside the front and back covers and there are colourful stickers to mark special days. The calendar pages have a column for mom's stuff and a column for family stuff, which is nice.
There are two things I would improve in this planner. I would add a place holder to make it easy to find the current page (I'm using a paperclip). I would also change the paper. The paper is high quality, but it's semi-glossy, so there can be a tendency for ink to smudge and when using a ball point pen, there is an imprint and some ink transfer (the book's printed ink) on the next pages. It's not a big deal, and it wouldn't stop me from buying the planner, but it would be nice to avoid smudges.
