This review is from: Monster Hunter Illustrations (Paperback)
The artwork in this book is beautiful.I've never played Monster Hunter, but I was interested in the series and took a gamble on the art book. Based on what I had seen from the game and Capcom's history with fine illustrative work, I was sure it would pay off. Going in with already high expectations, I was actually blown away by the content when I finally got it. Both in quality AND quantity. Visually impressive and diverse, the concepts of design and the world view inherent to every image also need to be appreciated. The scope of this project is given it's dues. In many ways, the artwork stands alone as a greater representative of what the game attempts to convey. As a MH outsider, maybe that idea is bias. Even if it is, it is not unwarranted. If anything, fans of the game should appreciate it even more than I do. Comprehensive design archives such as this need wider release. There are so many titles that still haven't been given this level of service if any at all. Thank you so much Udon for bringing these books our way. And of course, Capcom, for getting them published in the first place.

Great artbook for everyone,
This review is from: Monster Hunter Illustrations (Paperback)
I have to begin by saying that this is an awesome book. I have been a fan of the series for a while, but a lot of its content should appeal to other people. I have to say that at first I was a little worried about the orientation of the book, being in landscape. But after I saw the first couple of images, I was convinced right away. This format gives a lot of space for bigger images and those are the most interesting to look at. I've literally spent minutes on some of them, examining every little details. Fans like me will really enjoy finding objects and monsters they have met in the game. There is also a whole section dedicated to sketches of different element of the game like characters, monsters, armor and more. Also, for character designers that like to dress up their characters into armors, this is the book for you. There is a lot that will inspire you, same thing with weapons. For others that like to design creatures and monsters, this book is full of various illustrations that will probably help you.The book overall is solid, the paper quality is great and the format perfect. Totally worth the money.

great art, slight sloppiness in edition,

This review is from: Monster Hunter Illustrations (Paperback)
The art content is absolutely awesome. In that regard, it's a clear five star candidate. However, Udon have been a bit sloppy on the editorial side of localizing the book. It's nothing that will diminish how much enjoyment you can get out of the book, but the oversights are readily apparent. For example, a description box on a page early in the book carries text that does not correlate to the pictures on the page. Indeed, the very same text turns up in a latter part of the book, fitting the page perfectly. Throughout the book, there are small signs of sloppiness, such as spelling errors or consistently setting the opening parenthesis with a large amount of obliqueness, despite the text body, the content of the parentheses and the closing parenthesis being roman. It is a bit of a miracle how these kinds of things could go unnoticed. The impression is that there was no proofreading at all. Overall, it is sad because the book as a whole is amazing but the nature of the shortcomings makes it hard not to notice them every time. (or to wonder what artist comment would have belonged on that page with the mismatched text box) 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful

Although I was told 10 different release dates for this book, when it finally came I was not disappointed. The art is first class all the way, and you get to see the thought process that went into creating every aspect of the Monster Hunter games. It is a great reference for character and creature design, and I highly recommend it for any aspiring fantasy artists out there. Five stars all the way for this product.
