About the Author

Dr. Ernest Drake was born in 1822 in St. Leonard's Forest in Sussex, England. As a boy he was fascinated by paleontology, thanks to the fossil mania that had been sparked by Gideon Mantell's discovery of the Iguanodon tooth near Cuckfield in Sussex the year Ernest was born. When he was eight years old he had his first encounter with the knucker named Weasel, thinking it must be some kind of dinosaur. Nobody believed his story until he met then Dragon Master Ebenezer Crook at a meeting of the Sussex Archaological Society when he was fourteen years old. After he graduated from university in 1843, Drake studied dragonology under Ebenezer Crook, becoming a Dragonologist First Class in 1852, which enabled him to assume the title of "Doctor of Dragonology" after completing a ground-breaking scientific work on the migratory habits of Frost Dragons. He then set up a shop in the Seven Dials in London called Dr. Drake's Dragonalia as a modern front for the much older Secret and Ancient Society of Dragonologists. There he taught dragonology to a few select pupils. His magnum opus was a book called Dragonology, which was initially published on a print run of only 100 copies in 1896, but he also produced several other works related to dragons. All of these books stress the recurring themes that dragons ought to become objects of scientific study and that, as they are scarce, it is the responsibility of dragonologists to conserve and protect them wherever they may be found. (Dugald A. Steer)

4.0 out of 5 stars Long on knick-knacks, short on content Jan 2 2010
By A. Volk #1 REVIEWER #1 HALL OF FAME
Format:Hardcover
This is another installation in the -ology series that focuses on providing lots of interesting bits and pieces for children to discover within the book itself. Folding pop-outs, folders with notes, bits of "monster" skins in sleeves, and secret codes abound in this scrapbook/diary/journal of a 20th century monster-hunter. The book is intended to be a mock-journal of a monsterologist who describes many mythological monsters from around their world, their habits, and their habitats. The monsters are broadly separated into categories of: earth, sea, air, and fire, but there are other categories as well. There's dozens of monsters packed within the relatively few pages of this book, which means that each monster gets relatively little text. That's the biggest disappointment of this book- the lack of depth about the various monsters. What's most fun, especially for younger readers, are all the little scrapbook items contained within that give the book both an air of authenticity as well as turn it into a discovery project within and of itself. The hands-on nature of the book has a really strong appeal to younger readers (ages 5-12 I'd say). The pictures are generally drawn in an older, classical style, and the descriptions are quite tame, so small pieces aside, this book is suitable for younger readers, although they might not appreciate it as much as older children. Overall, if you view this book as a toy almost as much as a book, then you've got a good picture of what it's really best at. Well recommended for curious children.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for any fantasy buff's private collection Aug 14 2008
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The latest in the popular "ology" series, Monsterology: The Complete Book of Monstrous Beasts is as beautiful and elaborate as its many companion volumes. Featuring writings on fantastic beasts from griffons and hippogriffs to phoenixes, the pegasus, unicorns, kraken, sphinx, and much more (but not dragons - they're covered in a different book!), Monsterology reads a bit like a nineteenth century naturalist treatise. Numerous delicate pop-up flaps, textured "hide samples" or other special tidbits adorn the pages - most notably the so-called "ashes from the nest of a phoenix". "Ashes from a phoenix's nest [like those above] are said to give long life. They should never be ingested, as this could prove disastrous. Instead, the ashes are so potent that simply keeping this book on a nearby shelf will have a noticeably beneficial effect in fifty years or so." The colorful artwork adds the perfect touch to this "must-have" for any fantasy buff's private collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not accurate, but Who Cares! Sep 5 2010
By Katherine Aguire - Published on Amazon.com

As a student of cultural history, I place a certain small value on continuing the correctness of various mythology throughout time. I was a bit disappointed with some of the "information" in this book, as it doesn't always follow the accepted mytho-historical references. Barring that, this book is fabulous! It's obviously written for pure entertainment and gives more value to involving the young reader (and myself!) in becoming a true Monsterologist, rather than any cultural accuracy. I now believe myself and my 11-year-old son to have all the skills necessary to go out and begin our careers as Monsterologists, knowing now where to find the creatures, what details to look for, and how to record data. I'm seriously looking forward to our next safari. This book, and all of the 'Ologist books, are the greatest thing for the imagination since the cardboard box! I will be purchasing many more of these. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Aug 17 2008
By Julie C. Keaton - Published on Amazon.com

Perfect; see monsterology! This is an awesome book! The only problem is that it doesn't have as much cool bookletts and things you can interact, but by itself it is really awesome! It has some monsters you would recognize and some new ones!
