Book Description

An extraordinary castle of rock and ice, Monc Blanc is one of the striking natural monuments of Earth and provides mountaineers with a magnificent adventure ground. Starting in 1786 with the first ascent to the summit and continuing for two more centuries with the exploits of people such as Edward Whymper, Armand Charlet, Riccardo Cassin, Walter Bonatti and Christopher Profit, the mountaineering history of Mont Blanc is relived in this book in words and photographs Awesome spectacles of nature, the peaks of rocks and ice that rise above 4000 metres - Grande Jorasse, Aiguille Verte, Mont Blanc and the granite towers of Dru, Grand Capucin and Grepon have a history of testing mountaineers to the limit. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive book on Climbing and History of Mont Blanc., Jun 21 1998

I wish there were more books like this on famous mountains. Both the hardened alpinist and lover of mountains will enjoy this book. Fantastic photos, detailed history of climbing on the massif, and great climbers bios are all included in this large format (coffee table) book. Some of the more famous routes are outlined on the photos. A "must have" for anyone who loves the mountains.

An interesting book in its own right. The pictures are not bad ( but not that great either). For me, the hightlights of the book are some of the paintings showing people ascending M. Blanc during what seems to be a time period of a century or two ago. ( I wouldn't mind owning a couple of these paintings! ) The text about the history of the discovery of M. Blanc is rather fun to read. However, I thought the book was just a bit overpriced.
