Product Description

Product Description

Improve your care by improving the functioning of your clients or residents with Alzheimer's disease. Discover how the principles of Montessori education can help people with dementia maintain or improve skills needed in their daily lives. With these 41 step-by-step activities you can enhance the skills used to perform basic tasks, such as self-feeding, preparing simple meals, dressing, participating in recreational activities, and MORE! The secret to the success of these activities is that they are open-ended so individuals gain a sense of accomplishment at any level of participation, intellectually stimulating and meaningful, adaptable -- with suggestions for increasing or lowering the level of difficulty as needed, and springboards to many new variations of activities. Without doubt, Montessori-Based Activities for Persons with Dementia was designed with the busy activity director in mind. From brightly colored tabs to spiral binding to clear outlines and attention-grabbing callouts within these outlines, this manual is ready to use right out of the package. Too many activity programs today consist of "busy work" and lack of variety in activities. Make a change for the better and put the Montessori method to work for you today!

2.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing at best., Feb 4 2011

I bought this book based on the reviews and I am pretty disappointed with it. I spend a day a week with a woman with dementia who is mid to late stage and coming up with activities has been very challenging. I tried a number of the activities listed and she as well as I found them pretty mindless and "busywork". In the introduction they clearly state that persons with dementia need to feel a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem and one of the problems is that they are usually given busywork. I find cutting up a piece of paper on the drawn lines, lacing a shoelace through paper, or stringing wooden beads together contributed nothing to her sense of accomplishment. She may have dementia but she is not dumb. I was hoping this book would have some games that she could play or other activities to stimulate her thinking or memory. Most of this stuff was just eye hand coordination and for that it is WAY OVERPRICED.

3.0 out of 5 stars Montessori-Based Activities for Persons with Deementia-Vol.1, Dec 24 2008

Dr. Camp's well-written spiral-bound book seems to address the need of persons with moderate-to-severe dementia. This aspect should be included in the book description so that the buyer not assume it also includes activities for persons with mild dementia.

There aren't many guides --how to present activities to people with dementia. Was pleased with the information. Hope in future they will have more on the subject.
