Caravaggio brought to life.,
By
This review is from: Monteverdi;Claudio Caravaggio [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Bringing to life the paintings of Caravaggio, this is a most remarkable ballet production. Mauro Bigonzetti's choreography is a magnificent piece of Art in the true sence of the word.Bigonzetti's love for his"Rome and Italy"certainly seems to help influence his interpretation of Caravaggio paintings in showing the beauty of the human body.Valdimir Malakhov(also Director of Staatsballett Berlin)and Polina Semionova's(both Russian Principal dancers)give performances of true brilliance.I would be so bold as to say not since "Fontyne and Nureyev"have we seen such dancers. All nine 9 Principals are quite amazing. The lighting and set design by Carlo Cerri is quite unique and breathtaking. The lighting brings out the countours of the bodys mussels that Caravaggio used in his paintings expressing them through dark and light shades.A magnificent music score by Bruno Moretti-based on Claudio Monteverdi's classic score. It should also be noted that Monteverdi was born just 3 years after Caravaggio and in the same region of Italy. This is in my humble oppinion an absolute must for all lovers of ballet and indeed Art.A totally mesmerizing experience from start to finish, don't miss out on this.Paul Barrington

Superb moderrn ballet but might not suit all tastes,
By Mr. John A. Coulson "Tassie Devil" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Monteverdi;Claudio Caravaggio [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
In my book this ballet is an outstanding success although the premiere December 2008 met a mixed response (The critique is on the net [...]) IMO this is modern ballet at its best and is danced to very appealing arrangements of Montererdi's centuries old music. I consider it to be far better than AMELIA. The artistry, athleticism and interpretation of the dancers is impressive. They express a series of emotions with extremely effective lighting. There is no story as such, just dance interpreting the music supposedly giving a portrait of the painter, but it might not appeal to everyone. The video is first rate but the audio had me perplexed as ARTHAUS production omitted the usual audio selection in the introductory menu. The audio can be toggled between PCM stereo and DTS-HD via the player remote but that should not be necessary. I thoroughly enjoyed the brilliant artistry and like it more and more at each viewing but that is a very personal opinion so it is recommended with a caution as it might not be your cup of tea.

Another Arthaus Musik Technical Disaster,

This review is from: Monteverdi;Claudio Caravaggio [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This is a magnificent work that is marred unfortunately by Arthaus Musik's inability to produce Blu-Ray discs without debilitating technical defects. In this case, I was fortunate. Most of the unplayable sections were not in the ballet itself but in the curtain calls and extras. Most, but not all. In other Arthaus Musik Blu-Rays, I was not so fortunate. I had to return two different Arthaus Musik's Blu-Rays of Braunfels's Die Vögel before Amazon and I gave up trying to get a playable copy. By now, I have become expert on trying to remedy these defects with the help of Amazon's technicians. Alas, when the defect is in the manufacture, nothing can be done. I have contacted Arthaus Musik twice, but they have ignored me. Not only no quality control, but no regard for their customers. Caveat emptor. Oh yes, I did receive one Arthaus Blu-Ray that actually worked. I am one of the lucky ones, I guess.
