Could this be the funniest movie ever made? By any rational measure of comedy, this medieval romp from the Monty Python troupe certainly belongs on the short list of candidates. According to Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide, it's "recommended for fans only," but we say hogwash to that--you could be a complete newcomer to the Python phenomenon and still find this send-up of the Arthurian legend to be wet-your-pants hilarious. It's basically a series of sketches woven together as King Arthur's quest for the Holy Grail, with Graham Chapman as the King, Terry Gilliam as his simpleton sidekick Patsy, and the rest of the Python gang filling out a variety of outrageous roles. The comedy highlights are too numerous to mention, but once you've seen Arthur's outrageously bloody encounter with the ominous Black Knight (John Cleese), you'll know that nothing's sacred in the Python school of comedy. From holy hand grenades to killer bunnies to the absurdity of the three-headed knights who say "Ni--!," this is the kind of movie that will strike you as fantastically funny or just plain silly, but why stop there? It's all over the map, and the pace lags a bit here and there, but for every throwaway gag the Pythons have invented, there's a bit of subtle business or grand-scale insanity that's utterly inspired. The sum of this madness is a movie that's beloved by anyone with a pulse and an irreverent sense of humor. If this movie doesn't make you laugh, you're almost certainly dead. --Jeff Shannon

1.0 out of 5 stars This movie sucked! Feb 22 2000
Format:VHS Tape
JUST KIDDING! I just wanted you to read my review! worked, didn't it? anyway, down to business...first of all, as you've read in most of the other reviews before mine, this movie is hilarious, and the rather weak ending is forgivable because of the fact that the rest of the movie is damn-near PERFECT...secondly i would like to say that those of you who think the movie is "appaling" or "stupid" or that it "reeked", are, well, frankly, IDIOTS. you have no idea what comedic genius is all about, so you might as well go rent an adam sandler movie or something. and for those of you that didn't like the movie because it wasn't "historically accurate," THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT FUNNY! get a freaking sense of humor already! if you knew anything about monty python in the first place, you would know that they're not going for accuracy...they're going for humor and that is exactly what you get from this movie! if you want "historical accuracy," then go watch TLC or the discovery channel or something! don't go to your local video store and rent a movie out of the clearly marked COMEDY section! anyways, that's all i have to say...now that i have vented, i feel better! thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Monty Python At Their Wacky And Zany Best! May 15 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Their first movie outing after their TV program ended, which really gives us a glimpse into the minds of comedic geniuses like John Cleese, Micheal Palin, Eric Idle and company. I never get tired of watching these guys. Glad to have it on DVD, and at a good price, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars PYTHON AT THEIR BEST!! April 22 2013
By Hellroy
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
After all these years, if you are a Monty Python fan you have seen this movie and do not need to be told to see it. Just classic Python.

Movie: 5 Stars. It is absurd, outrageous and hilarious! Writing is as sharp, or shaper, than the best comedies currently.

Video: I would rate the video a 4/5. I don't think we will ever see a release of this movie on par with 2001 (on blu-ray the picture is STUNNING!) in term so picture quality. I think the quality of film it was shot on back then just doesn't have the resolution/quality of a 2001 and this is probably the best we will get. However it is an improvement over the DVD.

If you are Monty fan, have a blu-ray player and don't have HOLY GRAIL on DVD, buy the blu-ray! If you have DVD I still recommend the blu-ray. You can get it for around $10-$12 on sale and for a classic that is a price worth paying.

5.0 out of 5 stars These guys are brilliant.
I hadn't seen it in years and it was still so much fun. The humour has held up well even after so many years. The writing is so fun and fresh.
