Hayley Mills was well on her way to adulthood when she found intrigue and chaste romance on the island of Crete in this 1964 Disney attempt at Hitchcock in one of his lighter moods. That means the principals do wind up in a hearse trapped on a narrow street by celebratory but ominous masked paraders. And that seemingly good guys can and do turn out to be bad guys and vice versa. But it's Disney and Mills, so there are no deaths in this mystery, although gunplay and some scariness do earn it a PG rating. Based on the Mary Stewart novel of the same name, this 118-minute film finds Mills and her aunt visiting a Cretan village on holiday. In the face of hostility from their innkeeper's brother (Eli Wallach), the pair befriend a fellow Brit. The young man's escapades with jewel thief Wallach draw a beguiled Mills into a sometimes perilous adventure involving a harrowing ride upon the sails of a windmill, hiding out in an underground crypt, and a showdown with a cheetah-loving millionairess (the scene-stealing Pola Negri) aboard her yacht. MICHAEL EISNER - YOU JUST PLAIN STINK! If you really want Disney to make money on DVD sales, release them in their OAR. Anything less is totally unacceptable. The quality of the majority of the DVD's being released is just pure greedy, bush league garbage. But then again maybe you just don't care what the consumer really wants...

A lot of people say this was not hayley mills best movie that may be true i personally disagree, anyrate i think you will enjoy it, beautifull scenery and a wonderfull cast. hayley may not be as funny in this movie as previous ones (i still like her in tiger bay her first movie especially the classic line "what did he cut his bleeding 'ead off)

A great story by Mary Stewart is mutilated by Disney. Will we ever learn?

Nikky Ferris (a rather pudgy and blotchy Hayley Mills) is on holiday with her aunt Frances (Joan Greenwood). They find themselves unwanted by the local hotel owner (the famous Greek actress Irene Papas) and her abrasive brother (Eli Wallach). Little do they suspect that they will get involve in a nefarious international plot; One in which you can not tell the good guys from the bad until it is too late.

On the plus is a lot of good scenery. And how they could pay Irene Papas "Elektra" (1962) to be in this movie one can only guess.

The real problem with this film is that Disney got a hold of it and turned a mystery into a farce. Nikky spills the beans more than once and is bratty when called upon to be decisive. She is naïve and quite bratty for her age. The other characters are quite sophomoric most of the time. And too many times we must suspend any logic in figuring out where the runners are hiding and how the hunters no right where to get them. The story has a swift and inconsistent sort of ending.
