Pretty photographer Maggie Holloway begins Clark's latest (after Silent Night) lying in a coffin buried in a grave, pulling desperately at a string that leads to a bell with no clapper. How she got there is the essence of a convoluted tale of a ritzy Newport, R.I., retirement home whose well-heeled residents seem to die with alarming frequency, leading to high-profit turnover of their apartments there. Latest to shed her mortal coil was Maggie's much-loved stepmother, a fact that led intrepid Maggie to take an unwise amount of interest in the deaths-and also to question why several of the graves seemed to have little funerary bells on them. As usual with Clark, there is a stalwart admirer whose love does not immediately speak its name, and a surfeit of suspicious characters, including a scholarly funeral nut, a shady investment broker, a venal lawyer, a drunken, inept doctor and a nosy nurse. There's some fun in the sprightly Newport oldsters, and the many scenes and characters are shifted around smoothly and with a practiced hand. The bells gimmick seems no more than that, however, and the book is light on thrills-though there's nothing to put off Clark's myriad fans. This book tells the tale of a young woman named Nell who finally finds her long lost stepmother Nuala. Nell goes to stay with Nuala for a quiet two-week vacation so that they can catch up on each others lives, but when she arrives at the lovely old Victorian style house she is stunned to find that Nuala has been murdered, apparently the victim of a burglary. But Nell has the feeling that Nuala's death is part of a more complex scheme that involves all the deaths of those rich old women living at a fancy nursing home, Lathom Manor. Nell thinks that all the deaths have something to do with a man called Earl. A scary man obsessed with death and burial. Then there's Liam Moore Payne, Earl's charming cousin that Nell seems to have fallen head over heels for, but does he have something other than Nell in that handsome head of his? Can Nuala's good friend Mrs. Shipley help Nell discover the secret of Lathom Manor or will Nell be next on this evil murder's list? I enjoyed this book very much because of the suspense and the surprises that lurk in every corner. The ending is so great and so unexpected that I wish there were more. The person behind the murders is the one that you would least expect but he is right under your nose the whole time. I definitely recommend this book, Its great!

In the Nineteenth Century Victorians feared being buried alive. Some of them had a bell hung over their grave with a string threaded through an air vent in the coffin, so they could ring it if necessary, and they had their graves watched for a week after burial in case the bell rang.

New York photographer Maggie Holloway becomes the target of a serial killer when she discovers a link between the murder of her elderly stepmother and the deaths of several wealthy older women at the Latham Manor retirement center.

While visiting the women's graves, Maggie notices each has a bell buried near the headstone, a macabre gesture by the killer who has an elaborate financial scam underway. As she gets closer to the truth, she unwittingly puts herself in danger of being buried alive.
