Carly Simon could spin vintage Black Sabbath into the musical equivalent of buttery, well warmed comfort food. Not surprisingly, much like her earlier trio of classics from the Great American Songbook (1981's Torch, 1990's My Romance, and 1997's Film Noir), Carly positively nails the 11 standards collected on Moonlight Serenade. If there appears to be a little more magic on Moonlight that is missing from the others, you can credit her collaborator Richard Perry. As arranger and producer, Perry bends these songs in a direction that calls to mind the Simon/Perry classics from the early '70s, No Secrets and Hotcakes included. Confident interpretations and respectable playing aside, what you hear on Moonlight Serenade is naturalness and joy, a spirit that bespeaks Simon at her peak. That spirit's power to transform ballads and soft-rock songs into instant classics grabbed the '70s generation by the collar. With Moonlight Serenade, we thankfully see that spirit sweep across a ballroom with the same fullness and fire. --Tammy La Gorce

Reflections: Carly Simon's Greatest Hits

Product Description

Moonlight Serenade showcases Carly Simon's dusky and sensual vocal stylings on eleven romantic standards penned by some of the world's greatest songwriters including Glenn Miller, Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Jerome Kern & Oscar Hammerstein II, George & Ira Gershwin, and Howard Dietz & Arthur Schwartz. Recorded over a four month period in late 2004-early 2005, Moonlight Serenade includes the title track as well as the songs 'I've Got You Under My Skin', 'I Only Have Eyes For You', 'Moonglow', 'In The Still Of The Night', 'Alone Together', 'Where Or When', 'The More I See You', 'My One And Only Love', 'All The Things You Are' and 'How Long Has This Been Going On'. As she performs a selection of some of the most romantic songs ever written, Carly Simon, the quintessential singer-songwriter, proves herself a peerless interpreter of timeless songs. 4.0 out of 5 stars Great Big Band Revival. Jan 2 2013

Carly Simon does a wonderful job of vocalizing old Glen Miller favourites. I grew up to this music and it brings back wonderful memories. My wife and I dance to this music and make believe we are at the Waldorf in the 1940's. Love it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Retirement is an option. Oct 16 2005
Format:Audio CD
I don't understand (well maybe I do) the point of a standard's collection at this late date in Carly's career, especially since she was the first to originate the concept way back in 81 with Torch. She did it all so well back then, but not now. The voice grates, the production is shoddy, the material selection unimaginative.

Carly should consider retiring. I have seen a dramatic decline that really started over 20 years ago (83's Hello Big Man was her last great record), but became more pronounced and disturbing with 2000s The Bedroom Tapes. This began what I call the "I have no record contract so have to do the album on a tight budget" period of her career. The production values were just appalling on this and subsequent records. Carly would counter that she was trying to make 'rootsy" albums by recording at home and in hotel rooms, but I don't buy it. Studio time and good session players are expensive.

A suggestion Carly: if you want to come back creatively and commercially, it's not going to happen with a standard's or Xmas collection (my god, she put out 2 Xmas albums in 1 year, the 2nd basically a revision of mistakes made in the first). Carly, you must find a fresh concept or approach that has not been mined. You did it with Torch all those years ago, so I'm sure you can do it again.

1.0 out of 5 stars A somnambulist's offering ! April 6 2006
By Jolanda
Format:Audio CD
can't believe that she has embarked on this messy and dull enterprise !
There must a reason, though, she is no stupid ! She knows exactly what she wants and want she does. After many, recent chart flops with some more than good products, eventually she just wanted to savour again the taste of success, and the power of being a bestselling artist. And this is the result:a modest product with a grand,over-the-top production with only one " new " idea, the reunion with longtime producer/arranger Richard Perry.
Anyway the CD doesn't go beyond that. She sounds tired, off key, uninspired. The orchestrations are less than average.
Personally I do not like it,I like better some of her previous standards recordings like 'Torch' and 'Film Noir',the latter one passed totally unnoticed.
In the plethora of the current 'standard mania' releases,I would go back to the latest by Regina Belle 'Lazy Afternoon',as some of the previous reviewers have suggested..That ONE is 'real', great music, and I treasure it !
