Book Description

Oct 13 2009
The #1 New York Times bestseller! Michael Jackson’s one and only autobiography – his life, in his words.

With original Foreword by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, a new Introduction by Motown founder Berry Gordy, and an Afterword by Michael Jackson’s editor and publisher, Shaye Areheart.

“I’ve always wanted to be able to tell stories, you know, stories that came from my soul. I’d like to sit by a fire and tell people stories – make them see pictures, make them cry and laugh, take them anywhere emotionally with something as deceptively simple as words. I’d like to tell tales to move their souls and transform them. I’ve always wanted to be able to do that. Imagine how the great writers must feel, knowing they have that power. I sometimes feel I could do it. It’s something I’d like to develop. In a way, songwriting uses the same skills, creates the emotional highs and lows, but the story is a sketch. It’s quicksilver. There are very few books written on the art of storytelling, how to grip listeners, how to get a group of people together and amuse them. No costumes, no makeup, no nothing, just you and your voice, and your powerful ability to take them anywhere, to transform their lives, if only for minutes.” –Michael Jackson, in Moonwalk

From the 1988 edition:

Megastar Michael Jackson’s singularly brilliant career and intensely private lifestyle have become a magnificent obsession for millions of rock fans and celebrity watchers throughout the world. His double-platinum singles rocket to the top of the music charts with a velocity equaled only by the inevitable accompaniment of wild rumors about his eccentric personal life. Now for the first time, Michael Jackson breaks the fiercely guarded barrier of silence that has surrounded him in a remarkably candid and courageous book — Moonwalk.

In this intimate and often moving personal account of Michael Jackson’s public and private life, he recalls a childhood that was both harsh and joyful but always formidable. Michael and his brothers played amateur music shows and seamy Chicago strip joints until Motown’s corporate image makers turned the Jackson 5 into worldwide superstars. Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 have combined sales of over 200 million albums. He talks about the happy prankster days of his youth, traveling with his brothers, and of his sometimes difficult relationships with his family over the years. He speaks candidly about the inspiration behind his music, his mesmerizing dance moves, and the compulsive drive to create that has made him one of the biggest stars in the music business and a legend in his own time. The Guinness Book of World Records lists Thriller as the biggest-selling-album of all time.

In Moonwalk, Michael Jackson shares his personal feelings about some of his most public friends…friends like Diana Ross, Berry Gordy, Quincy Jones, Paul McCartney, Fred Astaire, Marlon Brando, and Katharine Hepburn. He talks openly about the crushing isolation of his fame, of his first love, of his plastic surgery, and of his wholly exceptional career and the often bizarre and unfair rumors that have surrounded it.

Illustrated with rare photographs from Jackson family albums and Michael’s personal photographic archives, as well as a drawing done by Michael exclusively for this book, Moonwalk is a memorable journey to the very heart and soul of a modern musical genius.

I have to admit that up until Michael Jackson's tragic and untimely death on June 25th, 2009, I had forgotten so much about his early years. Since that shocking day, memories have come back to me in the form of images and sounds from the past - all very much connected to the music and life of Michael Jackson.

I was born the same year as Michael and pretty much grew up with him. As a fifty year old adult, watching clips of Michael's early years on the Ed Sullivan show and in various performances as a young child I was absolutely stunned when I realized the power of his performances. His voice was strong, he carried himself with charisma and confidence and the sound was incredible. At less than eight years old, the stage presence he had is unbelievable - his musical gift was so magical and remains so to this day. How sad that so many of us had forgotten who he really was.

Michael Jackson, beneath all the hype, publicity and tabloid fodder was an amazingly gifted human being who was basically forced to live his life on the stage of fame's cruel and unrelenting spotlight - without the privacy and peace the rest of us take for granted. It is not surprising that he seemed different from the rest of us, he had never experienced that which the rest of us characterize as "normal". He was given to the public as a sacrifical lamb as a mere toddler. Without any choice at all he was made into an entertainer who was forced to live his life in the glare of the public eye - believe it or not he was only EIGHTEEN months old when he first started to sing.

Moon Walk tells Michael's story from his own perspective -he shares his feelings about being an adolescent boy who watched other kids play and have fun while he had no choice but to practice and prepare for appearances. This and so much more is contained in this book.

I feel so fortunate to now have the opportunity to hold this amazing and valuable book in my hands and to feel that I have a part of Michael Jackson that is truly timeless.

My book is a first edition with Michael's signature clearly written inside, I feel that this is about as close as anyone can now come to Michael now that he is gone - reprints just won't be the same. This is a book written, released and signed by Michael Jackson over twenty years ago. Written in his own words sharing his life and his many memories. There is no match for this book. To own this book is to truly have a gift that no one but Michael Jackson could give. A piece of music history like no other.

I give this book a five star rating because it has done what no other book can now do - it gives readers a glimpse into Michael Jackson's world, into his life as he knew it, his thoughts, his feelings and his beliefs, from his mind as no other piece of writing can now do. Plus the book was made so very personal by Michael - from the cover shots, the pictures that were chosen, the colorful endpapers and the beautiful embossed gilt signature on the cover boards. He also drew a picture of himself with his gloved hand on his hat with the year 1988 and a curved arrow beneath it. To top it off it is signed "by Michael Jackson" in beautifully scripted handwriting followed by a fireworks like drawing on the title page. The front end papers are beautifully illustrated with a color photograph of items such as letters and photos sent to him by fans along with his silver glove, red tie, aviator sunglasses, his passport and other treasured items. The end papers are a collage of his many album covers and various photos of Michael both alone and with the Jackson 5. The book contains many many color and black and white photos of Michael as a baby, as a young child, as a performer and along with his family.
This book is truly priceless and a Michael Jackson collector's dream come true.

Okay, we all may know what Michael Jackson is all about these days. We know that he dangled his youngest child over a balcony in Germany, he has totally altered his face since the earlier days, and yes, his skin is currently white, but wait! Stop there for just a second.

Go back to the year 1988. Michael Jackson is still capitalizing on the success of his first two major-label albums and has just released his third album, Bad. He is wondering what's next for him. He decides to write a tell-all autobiography, explaining his past, present, and future in music and the entertainment business. He also explains his love life, his ability to come up with extraordiary music, short films, and even dance moves, and also tries to clear up some of the nasty rumors that have since plagued his career.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the single greatest autobiography I have ever read in my life! Not only does Michael express his feelings about music, children, and personal life, but he also displays true detail and emotion within every single sentence. If you are a die-hard Michael Jackson fan, you will really want this book!

No matter what anybody will ever say about him, Michael Jackson is, has been, and always will be the greatest musical artist in the history of this world!
