Product Description

Product Description

Kenya has produced the greatest concentration of world-class runners, and fellow athletes have long been intrigued by their remarkable success. Toby Tanser has devoted much of his professional career living and training among Kenyan runners in order to better understand the unique status of East African athletes. In More Fire: How to Run the Kenyan Way, the author builds upon the success of his acclaimed Train Hard, Win Easy, the first book to provide insights into the Kenyan "magic" that so many runners and coaches had sought. Instead of special foods or secret techniques, Tanser found that Kenyan runners simply trained incredibly hard, much harder than anyone had realized. By adapting their training regime—which includes three workouts a day—and following their example, runners, whether novices or champions, are able to improve both their performance and enjoyment in running. For those training for a marathon or any other distance race, this book is both practical and inspirational.

Divided into four parts, the book begins with a description of running in Kenya, the landscape, the physical conditions, and the people; the second part concentrates on details of Kenyan training camps, training methods, and their typical training diet; the third profiles individual runners and coaches from the past and present, with each explaining their approach to running so that readers can gain further insight into their methods. The book ends with a discussion on how the reader can adapt Kenyan training practices for their own running requirements. More Fire: How to Run the Kenyan Way is essential reading for runners of all levels and experience.

This book is absolutely amazing. Any person even remotely interested in running should pick it up right away. The emotional plotlines inside reveal a behind the scenes look at the lives of so many great olympians. So many stories of hardship an struggle turning into true historical greatness. Also much can be learned from this book in the way of training, from novice to elite. There should be no hesitation to buy, fantastic read.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Fire, Jan 30 2009

This review is from: More Fire: How to Run the Kenyan Way (Paperback)
This is Toby Tanser's third book on Kenyan distance running, the other two being Train Hard, Win Easy, published in 1997, and a revised 2001 edition. He is uniquely qualified to write about Kenyan running. He lived in Kenya for 6 months (1995) and is a professional runner himself. The East African dominance of world distance running remains unchallenged and exceeds the reign of other of history's national dynasties such as Finland, Hungary, New Zealand and Australia. This book explores the various theories on this dominance and rejects most of them. Altitude, poverty, genetics, performance enhancing drugs, all are examined and dismissed. Readers looking for the secret will not be disappointed though; it's the ability to focus in an uncluttered environment (no cell phones, TV's, DVD's, play stations), a love of hard training followed by more hard training, a belief in doing whatever it takes, and an inherently optimistic nature. All these characteristics are developed in a life that Paul Tergat, former world record holder at the marathon, describes as "sheer hard work and persistent hard struggle, especially to get the basic necessities of daily living." Mr. Tanser's treatment of his subject is thorough, if not exhaustive. The book includes chapters on a brief history of Kenyan running, training, diet, coaches and over 100 pages of profiles on all the prominent Kenyan middle distance and distance runners. Mr. Tanser has done a terrific job of illuminating this subject and book collectors should note that his other 2 volumes on Kenyan running, now out of print, are selling on Amazon.com for over $100. More Fire is not for collectors though, but for distance runners and anyone in that category will be inspired by Tanser's account of the ferocious simplicity of Kenyan running.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everybody can benefit from a bit More Fire, Nov 13 2008

This review is from: More Fire: How to Run the Kenyan Way (Paperback)
Having read many books on running over the years on all aspects of running I can sincerely say that "More Fire - How to run the Kenyan Way" is the best book on running I have read.
Already been a fan of the previous edition, this edition is even better and pushes the knowledge and insight about Kenyan running to the next level.
Unlike other books on running, which focus too much on the scientific and technical aspects of running "More Fire" is a result of in-depth analysis and evidence of how the Kenyan elite athletes train, how they live, how they race and their fundamental values, attitudes and behaviours, which drives them to excel and dominate in the world of running.
I strongly recommend the book to all the aspiring runners, athletic coaches or those involved in governing athletics, it is a must read. Many valuable lessons can be learnt from how the Kenyan's do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, Jan 17 2009

This review is from: More Fire: How to Run the Kenyan Way (Paperback)
As an avid runner with some extra time on his hands, I read this book over the recent holiday season and have to say I really enjoyed it. The author certainly has a passion for both Kenya and running, and that feeling comes through in a very conversational and matter of fact tone. The book introduces us to dozens of interesting and accomplished Kenyan runners and coaches and lets us experience firsthand the training and lifestyle that has carried many of these individuals to the top. Although touching on some of the problems that exist in modern day Kenya (poverty, tribal warring, etc), the author also paints a wonderful and lush image of the Kenyan people and countryside as he takes us along on daily runs in, for example, the high and clear air of the rift valley region. Overall I found the book to be both inspirational and entertaining. My favorite suggestion from the book on how to run the Kenyan way is to "run each race as though you were delivering a message to the Promised Land!" A great piece of advice!
