Product Description

From Amazon

From beneath the tickles, kisses, and unfettered affection showered on them by grownups, the children in Vera B. Williams' Caldecott Honor Book cry out for "more more more!" The stars of three little love stories--toddlers with nicknames like "Little Pumpkin"--run giggling until they are scooped up by adoring adults to be swung around, kissed, and finally tucked into bed. Quirky watercolor drawings and colorful text feature multiethnic families, and young readers will rejoice in seeing the center of all the attention: the wiggly, chubby, irresistible toddlers. (Baby to preschooler) --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From School Library Journal

The spontaneity and delight of play is captured perfectly in this trio of multigenerational, multiracial "love stories" about three pairs of babies and their grown-ups. Told in a natural, colloquial tone, the simple, engaging text is finely honed with a rhythm that is musical. The style is as buoyant and infectious as the actions described: "Little Guy's daddy has to run like anything just to catch that baby up." Williams carries the same basic framework and language through each story, generating the repetition that is so satisfying to very young listeners, while the stories and characters maintain their own distinctions. Just as she celebrates universality within the text, Williams presents diversity with characteristic flair within her illustrations. Little Guy and his father are white, Little Pumpkin is African-American and her grandmother is white, and Little Bird and her mother are both Asian-American. Natural and unforced, Williams' choices are an accurate reflection of American society, but are noteworthy in their representation in books for this age group. Uncluttered, yet filled with movement, the splashy, vibrant paintings in gouache feature vigorous portraits and large, clearly defined objects set against a textured expanse of sweeping brushstrokes. The text appears in rainbow-hued letters within the illustrations, adding to the appealing design. Although it is a fine vehicle for toddler storytimes, the real strength of this book lies in the intimacy achieved when it is shared one-on-one between babies and adults or older siblings. A joyous expression of verbal and physical affection, these are truly love stories for our times. More, more, more . . . --Starr LaTronica, North Berkeley Lib . , CA

4.0 out of 5 stars such a sweet book, Aug 21 2002
This review is from: More More More Said The Baby Board Book (Board book)
i love that there are so many colours (including the people) in this cute little story. my daughter (2 years) loves this book so much that i can't keep getting it from the library--i have to buy it! she loves when i kiss her belly button and her toes and her eyes and nose when i read the book to her. it's nice that the book starts out lively (Little Guy runs so fast, Little Guy's daddy has to run like anything just to catch that baby up!) and ends nice and quiet (Little Bird falls asleep so fast, Little Bird's mama has to run so fast just to catch that baby up.). it's a lovely bedtime, or anytime story.

Vera B. Williams' "More More More Said the Baby" is a modern-day classic. Given as a baby gift to our now-much-older son, this instantly became a family favorite. It fairly radiates joy, both via the simple text--which centers on the deliciousness of hugging, kissing, cuddling, roughhousing, and tickling--and via the sumptuous pictures.

Williams has done something transformative here with the illustrations, making everyday scenes into modern Rousseau sequences--there is a wildness and an energy and a saturation of delicious color that call to mind some of the French master's more wild scenes (not to mention Gauguin and van Gogh's juicy color choices). Both a treat to look at and a pleasure to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for the youngest, July 31 2002

As new, happy parents of a 9-month-old, my wife and I have been working our way through the books recommended for children under one year old. Our daughter loves the experience of being read to and looking at the pictures, and to our surprise she does not just respond to the simplest books--books with stories are sometimes more engaging to her than concept books.

We got a little frustrated with the abundance of books about animals and their mommies and have been searching out books that feature real children and their parents. This is one of the few we've found.

The illustrations are bright and eyecatching, the language is natural and rhythmic, and the three stories in the book all have a similar but not identical structure. They also show parents (and one grandparent) interacting lovingly and believably with their child.

So far as we are concerned, this is a must-have book for the youngest children, if only to add variety to a collection of Eric Carle (we have five different Eric Carle's....) and other more familiar board books.
