Masterpiece enhanced,

On this second album, those Talking Heads trademarks still sound fresh and innovative: the unusual song structures, weird evocative lyrics, pained vocals and jagged rhythms. My favorites include The Girls Want To Be With The Girls, I'm Not In Love, the cover of Take Me To The River (interpreted as a type of anthem) and the remarkable track The Big Country with its country flavor, flowing rhythms and cinematic imagery. In retrospect, the sentiment of the song was snobbish but it charmed me way back in 1978. Talking Heads were in the same league as Television, Patti Smith, Richard Hell and the Voidoids - a new wave of music with poetic substance, as opposed to the 3-chord punk wonders of the time. Read all about it in From The Velvets To The Voidoids by Clinton Heylin. It still sounds great today and the 2nd disc substantially enhances the listening experience.

Is there a better line in any song to sum up what life was like in the 'burbs in the late '70s and early '80s?Usually bands have a hard time with second albums as they've had a lifetime to make the first and only months to churn out the second. The Talking Heads did not as they took a giant leap forward especially with the longer (by longer I mean 5 minutes plus not prog rock 10 mins+) tunes which are all standouts ("Found A Job," "The Big Country" and the Al Green signature cover "Take Me To The River"). Also, the Heads were revolutionary as they had songs that would just finish suddenly or fade in and build. At the time it was New Wave on a tangent as everyone else was doing the straight ahead 100 mph guitar three-minute anthem. A must buy for anyone who appreciates the "new" in New Wave.

My favourite Talking Heads album. This is a real gem that deserves more adoration than it gets. Thank You For Sending Me An Angel, The Girls Want To Be With The Girls, The Good Thing, Take Me To The River and With Our Love are my favourite tracks.
