Product Description

Book Description

MORE THAN A MOM explores how women can lead rich, fulfilling personal lives while parenting a child with special needs. The authors’ skillful blend of research, personal experiences, and feedback from over 500 mothers across North America results in a book that is jam-packed with practical strategies, advice, and reassurance for mothers trying to create more manageable and fulfilling lives.

MORE THAN A MOM addresses the universal concerns and questions of all mothers, coupled with the added intensity of raising children with disabilities. This how-to guide looks at the challenges mothers face at home, at work, and within themselves, with special attention paid to:

Staying healthy both physically and emotionally
Keeping friendships
Parenting your other children
Staying organized
Maintaining your marriage
Nurturing interests and goals
Seeking flexible work options
Changing careers or starting a business
Rejoining the workforce
Finding specialized childcare
Advocating for your child

The mothers who were interviewed for the book have diverse backgrounds and family dynamics. Given their differences and the fact that their children have such varied disabilities, it’s striking that these mothers face such similar issues. MORE THAN A MOM provides mothers with many voices and solutions that will resonate with their own circumstances. Husbands, extended family, friends, support organizations, and service providers will also want to read this insightful and fact-filled book.

This review is from: More Than A Mom (Paperback)
This is an accessible, well-organized and comprehensive look at life with a special needs child. It's not all theory - it's full of practical experience and advice. The quotations from real-life mothers facing real-life situations are relevant and moving. Read this book and share it with anyone you know facing the daunting task of raising a special needs child. Amy Baskin and Heather Fawcett really know what they're talking about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well laid out and researched, Oct 2 2006
By
This review is from: More Than A Mom (Paperback)
I recently presented this book to a group of church librarians, many of whom need books to support moms of special needs kids, and all of whom have limited budgets. I gave it a solid review, and as I passed it around the room, there was a strong buzz from people who saw it as a unique resource that fills a gap. So many books of this type tell you how to be a martyr. This book tells you how to have a life so you can do the best for your child. There are strong "access points" to the information: there's a good table of contents, a comprehensive index, and appendices that list everything from state and provincial laws on family leave to sample interview questions for caregivers. I see "More Than a Mom" as a valuable resource for families of special needs children, but also as a must-have item for libraries of all types.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a reference book!, Aug 8 2006
This review is from: More Than A Mom (Paperback)
"More than just a Mom" is a rare and special book that will be a valued asset in private homes and staffrooms alike. It combines careful research and essential information with compassion and insight and reads as easily as a journal. The format is readily accesible, with a clear table of contents which is divided into specific headings. Sit down and enjoy the whole book and then go back to reread sections as you need to!

Every section is written to inform, support and empower the reader and is reiforced with comments and observations from parents who themselves have children with special needs. These observations complement the authors' humour and honesty while adding an immediacy to the book that is insightful and practical.

Read , learn and enjoy.
