Book Description

Aug. 18 2009 Inspector Rebus Mysteries (Book 6)
In Edinburgh you're never far from a peaceful spot, or from a hellish one either. Now, in the heart of summer, in the midst of a nationalist festival, Inspector John Rebus is on the murder case of a young man left hanging in a spot where his screams would never be heard. To find the victim's identity--and his killer--Rebus searches from Edinburgh's most violent neighborhood to Belfast, Northern Ireland--amongst petty thugs, gunrunners, and heavyweight criminals. But before Rebus can get to the truth, he's bloodied by the dream of society's madmen--and staring into the glint of a killer's eyes.

Once again, Ian Rankin has demonstrated his incredible crime writing skills in Mortal Causes.

Product Description

"John Rebus, an outstanding creation... very ambitious and very confident with acute observation of the not-so-bonny side of Scotland."
Mike Ripley, Sunday Telegraph
"Rankin's ability to create a credible character, delivering convincing dialogue to complement sinister and hard-hitting plots set against vividly detailed atmosphere, is simply awesome."

A wonderful mystery by one of the best in the business. You'll want to read more of the Rebus series after this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not much plot June 24 2013

Rebus is a favourite character of mine. Irreverant, introverted, ruthless. In this novel he is none of that and it takes a very long time to get to the plot and solve the mystery. Disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Abridged but not obviously advertised as such! May 23 2013

This was an abridged book! I really dislike abridged books and nowhere was this advertised as abridged or I would not have ordered it. It's a big disappointment.

4.0 out of 5 stars INspector Rebus #6 June 24 2012
It is the end of summer and the Edinburgh Finge festival is on. The tourists are out in full force and the festival is threatened by terrorists and bombs. Under the old city lies another from medieval times and this where a young man is tortured and then shot 6 times.

Inspector Rebus is seconded to a terrorism squad which is very much to his liking because he has the freedom to investigate and wander where he likes. Rebus even ventures into the Gar-B, a housing project even the police have little control over.

Rebus' nemesis, 'Big Ger' Cafferty is back. Rebus follows all his leads even to Ireland. A book full of thugs, big-time criminals and really bad man there is also some time for Rebus the man. A female lawyer wants Rebus' attention so badly she is willing to break the law to get it.

This is a dark book with wonderful characters and enough twists and turns to satisfy the reader. On to the next in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rankin at his finest July 1 2004

I have to admit that I am an Ian Rankin junkie. I have never been much of a murder-mystery devotee, but Rankin has a way with drama and putting characters together within the Edinburgh context that is exceptional. Mortal Causes is one of my favorite Rankin mysteries because it breaks away from many of his typical roles. Inspector Rebus is not called on the carpet, as usual, he is hard on the case, and we have the chance to see a bit of his own personal history. This novel is an 'easy read' and I found it thoroughly delightful.
