A Method to The Mortician, Mar 16 2012

This review is from: Mortician (DVD)
It is not always wise to point out what something is 'not' as it implies it could or should be something 'other' than what it actually is.
However, in the case of The Mortician and any relative commentary of it I do think it is important to identify what it is 'not.' This is because in a world of catch phrases, stereotyping and categorizing, judgment is too often clouded by our preconceived ideas. The Mortician is 'NOT' a horror film, Method Man is 'NOT' a gangster or rapper in this film and the use of digital 3D is 'not' a distracting over the top gimmick.
The Mortician is a beautifully shot drama, with the necessary subtleties of acting by Method Man to give a real depth to a quirky character. While the story has plot twists and action the 3D technology was used in creating beautiful still frames for the story to unravel within and set a nice tone for the film. This makes the Mortician a quite exciting, daring and interesting film which I hope sets a standard for 3D dramatic works. It has a solid script and similar to his last film Kill,Kill,Faster,Faster, Gareth Maxwell Roberts has incorporated a really excellent soundtrack.

Good atmosphere, but weak plot, Feb 17 2012

This film had the potential to be quite interesting, but fell too short to be worth mentioning. In short, the story revolves around a loner mortician who has deep insecurities, yet must deal with the reality of his ghetto neighborhood and all of the social degenerates who would both do him harm, and generate demand for his day job. His insecurities stem from his single mother upbringing and an immense attachment to her, which otherwise seems to have impeded his ability to cope with stress and integrate normally into society. I have to admit the official storyline led me to believe there would be some level of horror to this film, but that is completely missing. Its much more of a low-level drama than any other category.
The short tagline for the story would imply a quasi-horror that tells a quality drama about a mortician and his psychological struggles. For about 20 minutes, it does so, and somewhat effectively through good atmospherics, camera work, music and so on. The problem is these initial 20 minutes repeat for the duration of the film, and there never really is any conflict/climax of note that brings meaning to the character or the story. It just continues with low intensity conflict between the mortician and his daily walk to the office where he's innocuously threatened by the local hoodlum, with the conflict never rising to the level of being a real climax or any meaningful resolution to the film. For whatever reason, each scene fails to build on the previous one and create that certain gravitas required to engage the viewer and make the movie memorable. Normally I would indicate whether a film should at least be rented (versus the clear purchase endorsement); in this case, you wouldn't necessarily ask for your two hours back after a rental, but I can't even recommend you do so.

THE MORTICIAN IS DEADSVILLE, Feb 25 2012

The Mortician (Method Man) is a shy dysfunctional man. His social life consists of a prostitute he visits for off screen sex. He speaks as little as possible. He has a second job/hobby as a taxidermist. In spite of what seems as two incomes, he lives in a run down place where he walks to work past buildings that look like they are in a war zone. I don't think the name of the city is mentioned. I suspect Memphis as he travels to Almaville, Tn.
Our Mortician has flashbacks to his youth which intensify when they bring in a dead woman with an elaborate tattoo of Sandro Botticelli's Birth of Venus, a painting which hung in his home as a child.
Meanwhile he has a "porter" (E.J. Bonilla) who is on parole and acts like a thug. There is a young boy who has witnessed a murder and is a person of interest to the killer.
The film goes on with very little action until one scene...and then it is about over. The movie was dull. The small boy's life is supposed to mirror the mortician's life as a child. That was not enough to make for an entertaining movie. The editing was poor.
N-word, F-bomb, brief sex, no nudity. Deals with prostitution.
