Interesting Film,

This review is from: Mr. Brooks (DVD)
When I first saw this movie on DVD, I did so without any expectation and I had no idea what the outcome was come to be. I was completely engaged into this movie throughout, and I found it to be quite an interesting thriller.
I read upon a study of Psychopaths, and this movie is a good example of such individuals and also how they can be influenced by other than our real self. I thought it was well-done and that it is very good in depicting the role of "other voice" in our head and how one gave in to the temptations to kill. It is a very interesting film to watch with such a fascinating cast, including Hurt, Moore, and Helgenberger and intriguing story plot.

An Overall Disappointment,

I had high hopes for this movie, as I love psychological thrillers and I felt Mr. Costner was due for a hit. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. Although Mr. C. did a good job, I thought the side story with Demi Moore just didn't make much sense. I was expecting a cat-and-mouse scenario between the killer and the cop, but they seemed to me to be two distinct, parallel stories and just didn't work.
And William Hurt was abysmal! He is certainly no longer the young Turk he was in The Big Chill - more like an old turkey. The last twenty minutes or so are good, in fact almost made the rest of the movie worthwhile....almost. In short, rent it, don't buy it.

I had high expectations for this film, as it seemed quite a departure for Mr. Costner. Although he was, in fact, quite good in the role, the pace of the movie was tedious in the extreme. It was only during the last 20 minutes or so that the pace picked up and the ending was enjoyable. William Hurt was an embarrassment, almost laughable. He is becoming a parody of the young Turk he was at the beginning of his career. Old Turkey is probably closer to the truth now. Seriously, rent it if you must - but don't put out any of your hard-earned money to buy it.
