5.0 out of 5 stars excellent Dec 25 2009

This book is a superb example of the opening up of business in China during the early nineties. It is beautifully written by an author whose knowledge of China and business in China is engagingly comprehensive. You feel the pain of starting ventures, deal brokering and his travels across China meeting many who not only symbolize the market but the spirit of business. This book is definitely worth the read. It gives the reader much insight into this intricate world.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good story May 24 2006
Format:Paperback
Books based on first-hand experiences are usually highly readable. This book is one of them and I enjoyed reading it a lot. But one would wish its depth to go deeper and hit the basic issues, yet this book is short in that. Well still a good read. To explore deeper issues about China's rise and its relations to the world, here is a more insightful one: China's Global Reach by a high-profile Chinese commentator/professional on the ground George Zhibin Gu, which is also based on first-hand experiences, but much deeper and more comprehensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read July 11 2004
Format:Paperback
I have lived and worked in China for 10 years now - this is the ONLY book that accurately portrays the realities of doing business in China (albeit from a BRIT - that I can forgive) - seriously - this is an incredible book that has been writeen with immense care and thought and I do belive is the only modern book about China worth reading - Joe Studwell and the likes of Tess Johnson cannot even begin to touch this one - definitely, definitely, buy it and read it!
