Book Description

May 1 2004
What readers are saying "Whoa, Darcy!" "Some parts are hilarious and some a walk on the wild side for Austen characters. Curl up and enjoy!" "Tells the tale I always wanted to hear… how the Darcys lived happily ever after… " "The only fault I found with this book was that it ended." Every woman wants to be Elizabeth Bennet Darcy-beautiful, gracious, universally admired, strong, daring and outspoken-a thoroughly modern woman in crinolines. And every woman will fall madly in love with Mr. Darcy-tall, dark and handsome, a nobleman and a heartthrob whose virility is matched only by his utter devotion to his wife. Their passion is consuming and idyllic-essentially, they can't keep their hands off each other-through a sweeping tale of adventure and misadventure, human folly and numerous mysteries of parentage. Hold on to your bonnets! This sexy, epic, hilarious, poignant and romantic sequel to Pride and Prejudice goes far beyond Jane Austen.

From Booklist

This rollicking sequel to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice was originally self-published in 1999 as The Bar Sinister. In Berdoll's wild, bawdy, and utterly enjoyable novel, the Darcys begin their married life as one of the happiest, most in-love couples imaginable. Berdoll picks up the story after their wedding, but flashes back to the days after the courtship, when Elizabeth and Darcy's passion for each other grew stronger. After a spicy wedding night, the couple finds their compatibility extends far beyond their matched wits. As Elizabeth settles into her role as mistress of a large household, her sister Jane grapples with her own, less passionate marriage to Charles Bingley. Thrown in as well are an illegitimate young man who just might be Darcy's son, a vengeful serving man who plagues the Darcys and develops an unhealthy fixation on Elizabeth, and suspicions of infidelity. Austenites who enjoy the many continuations of her novels will find much to love about this wild ride of a sequel, especially Berdoll's depiction of the enduring, strong love between Elizabeth and Darcy. About the Author

Researching her bestselling novels Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife and Darcy & Elizabeth, author Linda Berdoll was surprised and delighted by the euphemisms she turned up - most of them of an insulting nature. Berdoll compiled them here to entertain and enlighten. She lives on a pecan farm in Del Valle, Texas, with her husband.

1.0 out of 5 stars WORST BOOK EVER! Dec 29 2005
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a book in possession of a good title, must be in want of a reader. This book is even too smutty to be called a "romance novel"! It is NOT written in the style of Jane Austen (did she use the word "betwixt" in every other sentence - NO!) and it doesn't even stay true to the characters. Abductions, vivid accounts of rape and physical abuse, bastard children, Mr. Darcy visiting brothels (!), Mr Darcy killing people in sleezy bars - infact: just imagine anything that would not be in a Jane Austen novel and here it is, packaged under the title(s) "Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife" and sneakily "The Bar Sinister". "Excessively Diverted" was a much better sequel. As a huge Jane Austen fan I was super disappointed in this one however. Someone pleeeeease write a good sequel!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's about the characters not Jane Austen Jun 1 2006
By Maria
Format:Paperback
As someone who has loved the characters of Elizabeth and Darcy for more than 30 years, this book was not about completing Jane Austens' thoughts as much as it was about giving the couple's fans the passionate, romantic happy ending we wanted so much for them. I adore Jane Austen, but I also admit that all of her books left me wanted more satisfaction in the culmination of the romance. Her books pretty much wrapped up once the characters discovered and acknowledged their love, so we never really got to imagine them without beyond the angst and unrequited love stage.

Do I think the book was soft porn, wrapped up in a Harlequin romance novel? Yes. Was the writing style heavy handed, convoluted and employing excessive nonsensical words or euphemism? Most definitely. But I also know that I couldn't put it down from the moment I started reading it until I was done, and then I went back and reread my favorite parts. And I felt happy at the end, happy that two old, dear and treasured friends - even if they only exist in my mind - like Elizabeth and Darcy were doing okay and as much in love as I wanted them to be.

Yes it is silly to imagine two characters that way, but that is what was best about Jane Austen - she created characters who came to life for the reader. And what this book does is the one thing Jane couldn-t - it gave us a memory of their passionate love. It wasn't their sex life that compelled me to keep reading, but the tenderness and emotion of Darcy, who would do anythingfor Elizabeth and was singularly vulnerable to her, while still composed and stately to the world. I 'wanted' that for the Elizabeth I imagined in my mind, and I felt vastly rewarded that she got the love she deserved.

1.0 out of 5 stars No Magic Aug 13 2007
Format:Paperback
This book completely loses touch with Jane Austen's magic. The characters are annoying and sex driven with nothing of wit or intelligence. No satire here. No class at all. The book demolishes what Miss Austen created. No not read this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
While I enjoyed being able to read more about the love between Mr. Darcy and Lizzy, I didn't enjoy the extremely dark paths that they were faced with on occasion. Very verbose.
