5.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Sequel, Sep 8 2005
By
J. H. Sweet - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Mrs. deWinter is well written and an interesting read, especially for fans of Rebecca who want to know what happens to the family. Though I would have preferred some happiness in the lives of the characters created by Ms. Du Maurier, I believe this author did preserve the dark and moody aspects of the original novel. I read most books I like more than once, but I likely will not read this again because I prefer happier books. However, this story is believable as far as what happened to this family and their acquaintances, and the information is worth knowing. I did enjoy reading this book and definitely recommend it. I especially like the fact that we still do not know, and never will, Mrs. deWinter's first name. This preserves the continuing mystery surrounding this fascinating woman and the course her life has taken.

J.H. Sweet, author of The Fairy Chronicles

2.0 out of 5 stars Sincere disappointment in Susan Hill, July 12 2001
By
Sara L. Harnish (Milton, MA United States) - See all my reviews
As an avid fan of Rebecca, I couldn't contain my excitement at the thought of a sequel. That excitement dimmed when it came to my attention that Daphne du Maurier hadn't taken on the project of continuing Rebecca, but a relatively unknown author had. When I began this book, I was immediately critical of Susan Hill's attempt to continue the magical romance story of Rebecca. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more if Mrs. de Winter was a solo book, because it couldn't compare with its fabulous counterpart, Rebecca. I thought it a tragedy that a book with such magnificence should be followed up with a meager attempt at comparison. The writing style was somewhat boring, the plot despicable, and the ending absolutely HORRENDOUS! Had Susan Hill a bit more imagination or a better ability to write, Mrs. de Winter might have been more enjoyable. All in all, I wish Miss. Hill had kept her thoughts about what happened to Mr. and Mrs. Maxim de Winter to herself, so those of us who unbelievably enjoyed Rebecca, could continue to day dream about the possiblities of their future without Manderly. Now all I have is a tragic, and very nearly, stupid ending to remind me of the life of the second Mrs. de Winter and her encounter with the all powerful, Rebecca.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good writing, but the story wasn't nearly as good as Rebecca, Jan 21 2004
This review is from: Mrs. De Winter (Hardcover)
Sequel to du Maurier's "Rebecca," one of my all time favorite novels.

This book is set 10+ years after Rebecca ends. Maxim's sister passes away,
finally luring Maxim and his wife back to England for the funeral. And of
course, then creepy things start happening... Or not. Can one really escape
the guilt that one would be living with....?

As a sequel, Mrs. De Winter comes off as very similar to "Rebecca." Hill
caught the voice and atmosphere of the original book very well. The character,
Mrs. de Winter, has matured depressingly little over the ten-twelve years
since the first book ended. But that may have been necessary to get the plot
to progress as Hill desired.
