5.0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont July 27 2010

This is one of the most touching and beautiful stories it has been my pleasure to view recently. It certainly gives a deep understanding of growing old and trying to maintain one's independence. Joan Plowright is magnificent, as usual. Rupert Friend endears himself to the audience immediately. Would highly recommend it for viewing by all seniors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving Mrs. Palfrey April 15 2008

I don't know how I did it but I ended up ording two copies, by accident. At first I was annoyed but then I watched the film. OMG, what an amazing and beautifully told story. I'm giving the other as a gift and keeping my own to see again and again. Joan Plowright gives a breathtaking performance, maybe the best of her career. This is a film to experience over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brief Encounter April 21 2008
Format:DVD
I have long been an admirer of Elizabeth Taylor's novels, and was pleased to see the film version of "Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont" advertised in a cinema in Ashland Oregon a couple of years ago. For some reason I cannot explain the movie never appeared in local cinemas in Canada, nor did I read anything about it (or about Joan Plowright's award for her marvellous performance) in the press here at home. Therefore I was delighted to see it had become available in DVD, nor was I in any way disappointed by my first viewing of it--as so often does happen when I see a much-loved novel turned into a film.
This is a remarkable treatment of a "brief encounter" theme, showing beautifully how happenstance can be a means of grace. The two mismatched
companions, both wonderfully realized in stellar performances by Joan Plowright and Rupert Friend, are part of a formidable cast of actors in a London setting quite splendidly realized. What is further amazing about amazon.ca's description of this video is that Plowright herself does not appear in the product details, and neither do two other outstanding members of a consummate cast--Rupert Friend and Anna Massey. I shall now look for anything else the fine director Dan Ireland may have transferred from novel to film, and recommend this DVD to anyone who will listen--especially those who love poetry and who are open to subtle evocations of angelic interventions in the lives of those who accept the workings of divine grace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gentle delight. April 1 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This film is sweet, very funny and a times a little sad. It is the story of a senior who is making a change in her life. She says at one point that she has spent a lifetime being the daughter of someone, the wife of someone and the mother of someone. Now she wants to be herself. She discovers a soulmate most unexpectedly.

Joan Plowright shines in the lead role and Anna Massey, as always, is a treat in a supporting role. The fears and foibles of a collection of seniors are delightfully displayed with sympathy. There is a charming interaction with a young couple who are discovering what Mrs. Palfrey experienced so long ago.

The clash comes with those in the younger generation who are too busy with their own lives to take time for an old woman. A senior might want to give this film as a gift to very busy sons and daughters to be watched with the grandchildren. For those who like a good story, no violence, decent language and minimal sex, this is a must for the film library.

Thre were no car chases, explosions or bad language in this movie. Just a rather interesting story about totally believable people. How unusual! I enjoyed it very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont Jan. 5 2012
By Duchess TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is about a woman named Mrs. Palfrey (Joan Plowright), recently widowed after a long happy marriage. She then moves into a London residential hotel where she can be closer to her grandson and daughter. She is determined to make the best of it and hopes to be in contact with her grandson who also lives in London. When she slips on her way back home, is aided by a penniless young writer. She invites him to dine at the Claremont and he decides to play along with her, when her dining mates assume he's her grandson. A friendship then develops giving her a companion with whom she can talk to about life, love and poetry. If you like movies that have a lot of 'character' to it, this is one you may like.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming Nov. 14 2011
By caseygirl TOP 500 REVIEWER

Good story and a very interesting slant. A young man takes a keen interest in a very old lady. He is helpful to her and I got the impression in her mind he was taking the place of her grandson who never came to visit her. There are lessons in this story one of which is for the young to not forget the old. It is a heartwarming story and I enjoyed it. Joan Plowright is amazing!

This lovely, gentle movie is so refreshing. At the same time, it deals with many issues facing the maturing population. A good message here for the old and young alike.
