A truly inspiring read, not just for adults but the young as well!, Jun 25 2011

Most of us know him as the ex-special forces guy who is highly skilled, tough, strong, definitely crazy (after all he did drink his own piss on TV) and the presenter of one of the world's highest rated reality shows but I've always been curious about the "real" Bear Grylls and his journey right up to this point, because just watching him on TV tells me it's an interesting one, and boy is it! Packed with adventures, many near-death experiences and what I consider miracles as well, what will strike you about this book is that it is also packed with a whole lot of heart and soul as Grylls tells of his struggles through life and how he overcame countless obstacles through faith, perseverance and sheer will. From his training in special forces, to how he broke his back in 3 places during a parachuting accident only to climb Mt Everest 18 months later, this book will make you cry and laugh (out loud) all at the same time. It's a real easy read so young adults can enjoy it too, speaking of which I'm really glad my 15 year old just borrowed the book off me because I know that his story will inspire her to live life to the max, like an adventure that it is, and be anchored by faith not fear in every situation (and much much more which I'm too lazy to elaborate, so just read it!) because it surely has inspired me. I also can't think of a cooler role model for the youth of today than this guy. Can you?

Inspirational and motivating, Aug 14 2011

The first time I watched Bear's show, Man vs Wild, I was pretty shocked by some of his actions but also in awe. While some episodes or instances have me changing the channel, unable to watch, there was that something which kept me coming back and I realized soon enough that it was admiration for his strength and motivation. I think for many viewers, they see in Bear what they themselves wished they possessed - the ability to throw off all restraints (metaphorically) and just take the plunge into the unknown. For me, I've always had a strong passion for mountaineering. The extent I let that passion take me was simply hiking up a few small mountains, and for the most part just sitting down and reading books or watching DVDs on the sport. It's easy to tell ourselves we can't do something and therefore we find ourselves in a position where we believe it and don't even try.
Reading Bear's book gave me inspiration and motivation far beyond that of Man vs Wild. Reading about the extremes that he pushed his body to go through out of sheer determination to join the Special Forces had me out of my chair the next day, pushing my body through a work-out I can't recall it ever being put through before. Bear also shows himself to be a very philosophical and perceptive individual, with a deep love of nature and life in general. His experience in Calcutta and subsequent brush with Mother Teresa is heart-felt and uplifting, and it gave me pause to reflect on the circumstances and privileges of my own life that I take for granted. I can't even begin to comprehend the level of strength and will power required to get back out there after breaking ones back, but Bear knew he had it in him and he kept going. Wow.
I can't recommend this book enough. Bear doesn't just stand for being an adrenaline junkie or yes, drinking your own piss, but rather he stands for the knowledge that we can be more, we can push ourselves more, and we can accomplish more - but we need the belief in ourselves, that determination, and a willingness to put in the hard work. Cheers Bear - you've said what I think a lot of us need to hear.

True grit...if only more people had the same attitude, Jan 1 2012

To be honest having not seen any of Bears TV shows I was not sure what to expect from this book but given the reviews I thought I would give it a shot and I am pleased I did.
An inspiring book that gives a balanced amount of space to the different stages of Bear growing up, SAS selection, the Everest climb but also was balanced in terms of not all macho but also explained the emotional aspects as well. Some resonating quotes and on reflection one sums up well the core attitude and grit that is now missing in the majority of the UK; "life is what you make of it. And with that there comes responsibility. No one will do it all for you. That is left to each of us: to go out, to grab life and to make it our own...work hard, play hard; be modest; do your job to your utmost, laugh at yourself and sometimes, if you have to, cuff it."
To have the mental strength to survive the SAS selection but then recover from the despair of that back injury from skydiving only to then climb Everest is what shone through more than the physical effort required. Without a doubt though, a big helping of luck on several occasions. Perhaps was a cat in a former life and still had the nine lives!
If you are a person who treasures and craves for experiences in life rather than a world solely of material goods then you should enjoy this book.
