Product Description

From Amazon.com

Both morbid and joyful, British sitcom Mulberry begins when a quirky young man with a penchant for floral waistcoats named Mulberry (Karl Howman, Brush Strokes) shows up on the doorstep of a sullen, surly old woman named Mrs. Farnaby (Geraldine McEwan, The Magdalene Sisters, Mapp & Lucia). The irrepressible Mulberry proceeds to unsettle the servants--Bert (Tony Selby) and Alice (Lill Roughley in the first season, Mary Healey in the second)--as he puckishly lures Mrs. Farnaby into a fuller, happier life. But unbeknownst to Mrs. Farnaby, Mulberry harbors a secret: He's the son of Death and Springtime (talk about mixed marriages) and he's been sent by his father (John Bennet) to carry the old woman over the threshold--not a typical premise for a comedy. This DVD set has both seasons; season 1 is occupied with the unveiling of Mulberry's secret and the drawing-out of Farnaby, while the second finds a surprising richness of material in the set-up, ranging from Mulberry having a near-death experience of his own to Alice considering running away with another man. Despite the recurring presence of Death, the show is really about taking pleasure in life and making your own choices. Howman's zaniness could have grown tiresome were it not countered by McEwan's deliciously dour presence (though a TV interview with the pair, included as an extra, reveals her to be a sweetheart in person). As Farnaby softens, Mulberry calms down, maintaining a careful balance. An odd but likable show, cut off by the BBC just as it found itself in full bloom. Co-created by Bob Larbey, creator of As Time Goes By. --Bret Fetzer

4.0 out of 5 stars Mulberry an underrated Britcom but too few episodes, Jun 18 2006

Mulberry is one of the first Britcoms I have ever watched, and I enjoyed every episode on this DVD. Karl Howman plays the part of Mulberry very well; there is great chemistry between him and Miss Farnaby. The interaction between Burt and Alice are pretty funny as well. Being on the air for only two seasons is a shame. I would very much like to give this sitcom 5 stars but because of how the show progresses maybe it was inevitable that the show would have a short run. There should have been another series just to end it properly. Still it's about time this show finally arrived on DVD. I highly recommend this DVD to those who enjoy Britcoms, or to anyone who likes a good sitcom.

I loved watching Mulberry when it was on TV, and for a while thought that I was the only person in the world who had seen it.

I had emailed the BBC quite a while ago to inquire about a Mulberry DVD, and was told in not so many words 'sorry, it didn't do well enough, too bad'. I am so ecstatic that I can own it on DVD now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mulberry; The Complete Series, Aug 27 2009
This review is from: Mulberry Comp Series (DVD)
While a disappointment for those of us who wanted to know "what happpened," as the series was cancelled at the end of the 2nd season, this is still well worth watching. The first season is rather bleak, the humour clever, but rather painful at times, with the characters of Bert and Alice considerably less likeable than in the second season. The second season, however, is a treat: clever and funny, and highly entertaining. Just wish there'd been a third.
