Product Description

Inspired by real events, Munich reveals the intense story of the secret Israeli squad assigned to track down and assassinate the 11 Palestinians believed to have planned the 1972 Munich massacre of 11 Israeli athletes - and the personal toll this mission of revenge takes on the team and the man who led it. Hailed as "tremendously exciting" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone), Steven Spielberg's explosive suspense thriller garnered five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

The one thing I have to say about this movie is the outcome of the blu-ray picture quality,
it was masterfully done by someone that knew how good this movie should look, 3 stars for that,
now the movie who hasn’t been told or seen it first on T.V. back in 1972 I’m sure, of this tragedy,
it’s about hunting black September for the massacre of the Israeli Athletes in Munich (West Germany),
There is an introduction by director Steven Spielberg” before the movie starts or you can skip it if
you want, I chose to see it for the raw footage that I’ve never seen before, never had a T.V. then,
even though the sex scene was off track an weird for me, I chose to overlook that, remembering all
that died while having sex with your wife really seems oh so weird, what was in his vision (Spielberg)
of showing that scene that way I don’t know,
Widescreen 2.35:1
Runtime 2 Hrs. 44 Min.
English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. is awesome.

This Movie is quite dramatic. It is based on the events after the Massacre of Israeli Athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich (West Germany). The Movie tells the story of the Israeli response to the Massacre and the agents who went out to get revenge for the Killings. This is a very dramatic story (not light entertainment). The characters are well developed, the film tries to explain why various people did the things that they did.

> The Steven Spielberg's movie, "Munich". Nominated for five Academy award's, it reveals the story of the secret Israeli team, assembled to track down and assinate the Palestinians, responsible for the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics. From the team commissioned by Golda Meir, to the teams completed mission, the portrayal of events follows closely the actual operation. From tracking individual terrorists to their assination. Probably, the most important aspect of the movie was the portrayal of the personal toll exacted on the team, from parting from their families, recriminations on killing in cold blood. The Team Leader, attempting to justify the murders, states," Imagine you are a soldier at war for the defense of Israel".

I bought this DVD in part because of it being mentioned by Kirk Douglas in his latest memoir. I remember the horror of the Olympic Terror attacks back then, I was not especially aware that the Israelis had gone after the perpetrators. Spielberg tells a good story, not glamorous or pretty, but killing people is doubtless not pretty or easy or as casual as is too often depicted in films. Very well portrayed & depicted, the film shows how different people are affected by what they go through in seeking revenge.

When Avner Kaufman got the call

To track down Black September

He chose to change his office job

For one that he'd remember

Untrained he was in hand to hand

Not really versed at killing

But as Golda Meir asked him to

His heart was more than willing

His little group was motley crewed

With a large expense account

Once receipts were signed and stamped

The goal was paramount

The first one was a learned man

They shot at point blank range

The second didn't realize

His phone had had a change

The third should not have gone to bed

And then all went to hell

They crossed their information source

Who didn't take it well

One by one the team was gone

And Avner's paranoid

What once was vengeance for his own

Got sucked into the void

At mission's end he's a changed man

He's haunted, spooked and scared

He did his part, and though he's out

He knows that no-one cared

This movie isn't Spielberg's best

It's long and too protracted

It may not be the gospel truth

But it's certainly well acted

Steven Spielberg has made many fine movies, but this is not one of them. I was very young at the time, but I will never forget that Munich massacre. The world then was not the same place it is now, where we see terrorist activity on a - so very sad to say - regular basis. Much more value was placed on human life at that time, and the whole world was utterly appalled by this barbaric act. And, despicably, they boasted about it afterward.

I found this movie to be a very limp wristed and wishy washy version of a very intense response by the Israelis to avenge the deaths of their defenseless athletes. The team they gathered together for this are portrayed as a very inept group, rather cowardly, who didn't seem to know what they were doing half the time, and behaved like a very tame crew indeed - all of which they most definitely were not, from what I have read - who were sent to effect this dangerous and perhaps soul destroying mission.

Part of the problem was in the casting. Eric Bana is not an actor who inspires one with his onscreen bravery or courage - indeed he always comes across as rather spineless - and to my mind, totally the wrong actor for the role as the team leader. Spielberg would have been far better off to have given this role to Daniel Craig, or some actor of that calibre, who, when he had the opportunity, came across with the goods. The rest of the team just left me cold, even though I think Ciaran Hinds is a very fine actor, but badly used in this. There was some really fine acting though from Michael Lonsdale - always a wonderful performer - as the French connection, and also the fellow who played his son. But Spielberg, as the Director, could have gotten stronger, more gutsy performances from his actors, so the viewpoint we got must have been his.
