Unlikeable character,
By
Ce commentaire est de: Murder Is Binding (Mass Market Paperback)
While the mystery itself is passably interesting (I had it figured out less than halfway through), the characters - especially Tricia - are rather unlikeable.Tricia is a self-centered, judgmental, know-it-all. She looks down her nose at not only her sister, her employees and supposed friends but just about every single person in town. Mr. Everett, Ginny and Miss Marple are actually the only characters I really liked in this book. The sheriff - well, all I can say is the author must have some serious authority issues to create this monstrosity. It boggles the mind how anyone as truly INEPT as this female sheriff could be taken seriously. She tries to pin the murder on Tricia based on nothing more than JEALOUSY! There's a wonderful stereotype for women in power if I ever did read one. *ugh* Even worse, in the second book Barrett continues this pointless jealousy and has the sheriff, yet again, trying to make Tricia's life miserable for jealousy from the first book that she's apparently unwilling to let go of. Overall, while the mystery itself is interesting enough, the majority of the characters left me cold. In the process of reading the second book in this series, I am undecided if I can bring myself to read the third if Barrett plans to continue making her lead character, and several of her secondary characters, so unlikeable. While I agree with the poster above who commented that a town based around bookstores sounds truly marvelous, if it were anything like this town and had these types of people in it, you couldn't PAY me to go there.

Cute mystery,

Description: When Tricia moved to Stoneham six months ago, she was planning to fulfill a lifetime dream of opening a mystery bookstore. She had a plan... a plan that didn't include becoming the number-one suspect in a murder investigation. As if that wasn't bad enough, her annoying older sister has popped in for an unannounced visit. But at least business is booming...My thoughts: Doesn't a town whose economy is based on classy used bookstores sound like a great place to live? It took me a couple of chapters to get into this story, but I ended up really enjoying it. Tricia is a fun protagonist; I kind of wish I had her life. The interaction between she and her sister, Angelica, was highly entertaining. There are plenty of other quirky characters in the town of Stoneham to keep the story moving along, as well. Lots of potential for future installments. The mystery here was just the right amount of intriguing, and not too grisly. A perfect book to curl up with on a rainy afternoon. (Not that I would know that from personal experience- I have kids!) Anyway, I don't have a whole bunch to say about this book, other than that it was a fun and quick read. If you enjoy "cozy mysteries" this is a great choice for you!

This book was recommended to me by Amazon based on my previous orders and it seemed to be a book that I would be very interested in. The premise of the main character owning a used bookstore, living in an apartment over her shop and a cat with an attitude named Miss Marple seemed like just the cozy story that I would enjoy. It was a fun easy read with just the right number of characters so as not to get confused. I enjoyed the book and it kept my attention throughtout. I look forward to reading her next book but I am pacing myself as, at this time, Ms. Barrett has only four books written in the booktown mystery series. Try this one: you will enjoy it and come back for more.
