Product Description

Take one of the crowning musical geniuses of mid-nineteenth century Europe; surround him with enemies, some of whom are fiercely jealous of his talent, others in love with his beautiful wife (a musical genius in her own right); add several scoundrels including a seller of stolen jewels and a kleptomaniac music critic who ends up murdered under highly mysterious circumstances…and there you have the world of Robert and Clara Schumann in the Germany of the 1850s, as told by the narrator, Düsseldorf’s top detective, Inspector Hermann Preiss. A delightful historical mystery with a light touch, the reader is lead into the world of mid-nineteenth century music, where classical composers were stars and their egos were just as monstrous as the rock stars of today. Enter Brahms as the latest rising star in the firmament, and the world of Robert and Clara Schumann is rocked to its core. A mysterious off-key A on the Schumanns’ piano leads to one of the more interesting cases that Inspector Preiss has ever tackled. But are all mysteries meant to be solved? Inspector Preiss has the final answer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Major gets an A+, Jun 30 2008

This review is from: Murder in A-Major: An Inspector Hermann Preiss Mystery (Paperback)
Music lovers and mystery lovers will love this book, since it is a mystery involving music.

Robert Schumann hears a sharp A major. Without giving anything away, what he hears is real.

We get a complext plot involving Schumann, his wife Clara and her father, along with the major piano tuner of the day and an obnoxious music critic.

We also get little sub plots involving the interaction of Schumann with Brahms and Liszt.

In short we get a real mystery set in a real historical context, involving real personalities.
And cenral to all this is Inspector Hermann Preiss, who has to make sense of all the goings on.

For people who like historiacl fiction, for people who love music, and for mystery lovers, this is one fine read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A riveting mystery set in 1800's Germany, July 11 2008
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Murder in A-Major: An Inspector Hermann Preiss Mystery (Paperback)
While skill at music is truly a magnificent thing, there are downsides to everything. "Murder in A-Major" is a story about a musical genius, blessed with great talent and cursed with jealous rivals who lust after his wife. When the musician is murdered well before his time, Inspector Hermann Priess is charged with finding out exactly who is responsible for this heinous crime, in this riveting mystery set in 1800's Germany. A top pick for mystery collections.
