If you enjoy the voice of a fine counter tenor Matthew White is quite simply one of the very best in the world today. I have heard him in person at the Boston Early Music Festival, but these wonderful pieces from the era of Elizabeth I and the first Stuarts on the English throne are sung with such beauty they really emulate the era from whence they were born, That era in music, poetry, was one of bittersweet sentiment, which carried over to the Baroque and Romantic. This CD is well worth getting for any collection, unless you really dislike the counter tenor voice. But since it often is the closest we can get to what was heard in early music, that of the castrato, the male soprano of that era it is hard to imagine any collection of early music not having such an addition. A great counter tenor such as Mr. White is really a vocal jewel. The title of this CD says it all, Quote: (Music and Sweet Poetry Agree) end quote. Indeed they do!
