By W. B. Mutton on March 28 2009
Format: Audio CD
Here is life. Tomas Luis de Victoria, surrounded by young noblewomen disappointed by love or looking for love in Christ, in the Convent of the Barefoot Royals, channels all that Spanish/Moorish mysticism into polychoral groups sprinkled through the cathedral, and knocks those reform-minded Protestants flat on their backs...for awhile at least. His music is like the Tower of Babylon or the Two Towers scratching at the bottom of the sky, crying for the pain of Earth and longing for ecstasy: flowering, soaring, heart-breakingly vulnerable.
