4.0 out of 5 stars The French do it again, another impressive horror film!, Nov 29 2010

This review is from: Mutants (DVD)
It is so refreshing to see a well done horror film that it actually a pleasure to watch. David Morley seems quite accomplished, I am really looking forward to any future projects from him. The frenetic camerawork and pulse-pounding score during chases gave a heightened sense of terror. There were plenty of gory moments, but these were nicely balanced with suspense. What really set this apart from the slew of recent zombie movies is the story. It follows an actual, gradual transformation and the emotional and physical toll this takes on both the infected individual and the partner desperate to save him. The girlfriend being a doctor added an interesting element, because she really was medically attempting to treat him, and hold out for more advanced medical intervention. This wasn't a simple case of "Oh, you're turning into a zombie? Let me blow your brains out." The hopelessness and desperation was actually quite heartbreaking. The effects were really extraordinary, the accelerating infection slowly laid out in an increasingly gruesome, bloody and physically alarming manner. Mutants adds an intriguing element of humanity to the monster that audiences all know well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love And Carnage--A French Sleeper Details An Intimate Love Story Amidst The Zombie Apocalypse, Aug 9 2011
By K. Harris "Film aficionado" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Mutants (DVD)
A pleasant surprise, the intimate French film "Mutants" tackles the familiar zombie genre and infuses it with real human drama. If you come into the film anticipating an all-out creature feature assault, then the slow build tension--most of which arises from man-to-man interactions--might be a little bit of a let down. However, for those that like a little bit of substance with their carnage, there is much to recommend this tense examination of survival. Set in a wintry and isolated environment, "Mutants" makes the most from its claustrophobic setting. Add some good effects, absolutely terrific performances, and an intriguing moral dilemma and this movie far exceeded my expectations. Though not completely original, this still works as a grown-up horror story that balances a thoughtful narrative with gory mayhem.

After a virus transforms much of the population into flesh eating monsters, a young couple (who happen to be paramedics) are on the run to rumored safety at a government installation. Fighting threats both human and grotesque, they hole up in an abandoned building when their fuel supply dwindles. Completely alone, they struggle to cope realizing that the guy has been bitten and is in the first stages of infection. Desperate for help, they soon discover a new terror--and it's not from monsters! Another band of survivors find our couple and it starts to become less certain where the greatest danger lies. As the tension escalates, our hero continues his metamorphosis and soon there is an all out battle for survival. The action sequences are executed with precision, and the payoff is more affecting due to actual character development within the love story.

The theme of unconditional love really gets a work-out here (Amazon astutely referenced Cronenberg's Thy Fly as a comparison point). It takes a traditional story and layers it with an emotional resonance that is quite unexpected and refreshing. I'm not sure why I hadn't heard of this film, but if you're a fan of the genre--this is a strong entry. The lead couple both give gritty and realistic performances that make the final resolution much more powerful and disturbing. Check it out for another fine depiction of the zombie apocalypse. KGHarris, 8/11.

France rules in the realm of horror! This film somehow hasn't received much attention.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Zombie like" Mutants, July 14 2011
By R. Diamond "Diamondback662" - Published on Amazon.com

Another Movie recently watched on Netflix in HD. This time French with English subtitles and a pretty good zombie type movie. I won't give away the whole plot but here are some general thoughts...
Much of the theme is about seeing a loved one turn into something unrecognizable.
Stars Sonia (Helene de Fougerolles) who was in The Beach (at least that's where I recognized her from) and Marcus (Francis Renaud).
Although technically these aren't the undead, but the infected. It still has that "zombie-like" feel to it. They're infected, they bite you, you become infected...
Good makeup work for the monsters. Everything looked good in HD, although being filmed in Winter in Europe, everything has kind of a gray and moody tone to it. Even blood was very dark colored and realistic looking.
The acting is top notch..just in French. Far better than B movie grade.

* Die Hard zombie fans will enjoy this as a rental.
Others not really into the genre will probably want to avoid.
