One of the best Regencies ever written.,

I have re-read Mutual Consent repeatedly since I first bought it. The hero and heroine are beautifully drawn, as are the incidental characters; the heroine's aunt, her father, the hero's mother and his close male friends. This is a marriage of convenience plot, and the couple's efforts to understand each other and the misunderstandings between them are very well done. Barbara Cribbage is honest, forthright and intelligent. The Earl of Chatworth is arrogant and powerful, yet his concern for his mother shows his vulnerable side. I highly recommend this book as well as any of Ms Buck's work. She does the arrogant, disdainful aristocrat to perfection, but the way her lady's finally appeal to their lord's better instincts is usually subtle and a surprise. Enjoy!

Wish it was longer,

Only 3stars for this, and only because I felt the ending of the story was too easy! Our heroine's father was dealt with too quickly, our hero redeemed himself with little effort, and our heroine definitely fell in love with the hero too quickly. I really liked the story, and the heroine was wonderful, but after all the anguish and pain both her father and her husband put her through, I wanted them to suffer so much more! Another few chapters dealing with the hero's efforts to redeem himself in the eyes of his wife would definitely have not gone amiss. Let's face it, he was an arrogant, unfeeling, angry, selfish, ignorant twit for most of the book, so for him to suddenly reform, and for her to "fall in love" after a few weeks of him treating her with some respect was just plain annoying! Yep, he definitely should have suffered more! The man visited his mistress on his wedding night, invited her to his wife's first "ton" ball, and then not only attempted to ravish his wife, but hit her........ok by accident, sort of, but still! Much more suffering needed! And the way her father was dealt with....huh? That's it, no details? More gory details please! So, I just finished the book unsatisfied, therefore only 3 stars.

Well Done-Great Example of Regency Style Writing,

The haughty and arrogant Earl Of Chatworth, 26, is forced to marry in order to pay off his debts. Barbara Cribbage is also forced to marry him by her ruthless father in order for him to obtain acceptance by the ton. They both come to an mutual agreement beforehand as to the roles in their marriage.
The writing style is very well done and much true to Regency style. You can sense the intensity of their arguments between the main characters, as if you are in the room with them. The main characters are well developed and there are no explicit scenes. I wished the book was a little longer, the ending seemed a little rushed but with that said I can not wait to read again! |
