A kinder, gentler view of horse training and handling is sorely needed in this world, and this book goes a good distance in providing that view. With none of the "mysticism" that marketing campaigns have built up around individuals selling their "training" products, this book presents one man's view of the many horses in his life and his gentle way of working with them as a partner, not as the dominant force that seems so prevalent in many of the training methods that achieve "learned helplessness" in their animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Colonel Podhajsky's narrative. Sep 24 2002
Format:Paperback
This book is written in a style similar to a series of short stories. Colonel Podhajsky passes along some of the lessons he has learned from his four legged teachers that any horse person can understand. It is like listening to a friend speak of his experiences rather than studying a textbook. This makes the book both entertaining and educational. What a pleasure to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended Reading for All Riders Dec 12 2010
Format:Paperback
Colonel Podhajsky gives a valuable account of the history of the horse/human relationship that should be read by all horsemen and women regardless of the type of riding they do. His training techniques - long before the current trend of "natural horsemanship" - are based on working with the horse's nature to create a willing partnership. After you read this book, you will understand why good horse training takes time and there are no shortcuts without consequences.
