alive,

This review is from: My Life in Ruins (DVD)
I think the person who wrote the other review is living in the past, today is today, look at the movie the way it was meant to be. I loved this movie and thought it to make people feel good, which is something we all need today, there is enough pain and violence. I look at movies like this to take us away from our everyday problems, and that is exactly what this movie did for me. I have a lot of my friends who saw the movie and loved it as well. I thought they covered the beauty of the country really well, and one of my friends told me she was feeling lousy and after seeing the movie, she felt like a different person. I LOVED IT.

How do you say "dud" in Greek?,

Georgia (Nia Vardalos) is an American living in Greece and working as a tour guide. She hates her job, thinks all tourists are idiots, and is sick of Greece, too. But on her next four-day trip everything will change for the better, thanks to the quirky members of her tour and her moody bus driver. This movie had so much potential but is really terrible. It's neither funny nor romantic and the dopey cast is always blocking our view of beautiful Greece. The plot is a lackluster rip-off of the very funny If It's Tuesday This Must Be Belgium but lacks its charm and good script. Vardalos' self-deprecating character that was so witty in My Big Fat Greek Wedding is just tedious here, making her transformation at the end ridiculously far-fetched. The tourists have one-dimensional personalities and are uniformly corny and over-the-top. Veteran actor Richard Dreyfuss plays the sterotypical saintly old man who turns Georgia's life around by urging her to find her "spirit." I was fascinated that he looked so much like Eli Wallach but he was such a know-it-all that I couldn't stand him. Rachel Dratch is also extremely grating as a fellow passenger on the Bus of Fools and there's nothing appealing about Alexis Georgoulis who plays the object of Georgia's affection. The plot is so predictable, it's insulting. Stick with If It's Tuesday for a genuinely funny look at the trials of the guided bus tour. The DVD has no Extras at all. I gave it two stars for the lovely scenery.

See for yourself,

This review is from: My Life in Ruins (DVD)
Why are there so many critics in this world? This is a sweet, fun movie that opened up a chance for many to see places in Greece that can not be filmed for commercial reasons. Kudos to Nia for gaining approval to film in such fantastic places as Delphi, Olympia and at the Acropolis. This is the perfect movie for a light, summer night or for when you just need a "pick me up." See for yourself. Greece is a magical place and it was a delight to see it on the big screen. Nia is charming on and off screen and I think she is terrific. You go girl!

"This Is Comedy, The Greeks Invented it",
By Brian E. Erland "Rainbow Sphinx" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: My Life in Ruins (DVD)
The 2009 release 'My Life in Ruins' turned out to be a totally unexpected surprise. The scenery is magnificent, the storyline and dialogue sharp and the cast of uniquely quirky characters will keep you throughly entertained from beginning to end. The budding romance between tour guide Georgia (Nia Vardalos) and bus driver Nico (Alistair McGowan) was really quite charming and tourist and self-designated funny man Irv (Richard Dreyfuss) was clearly the secret ingredient that made it all work so well.I particularly enjoyed the way the film incorporated an ongoing subtext suggesting that the Greek Gods may be subtly interacting with the tour and tourists. It was just the right touch of whimsy and depth to supply an added dimension to this delightful romantic comedy. 34 of 40 people found the following review helpful

Laugh out loud often!,
By H. Halverson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: My Life in Ruins (DVD)
I saw this movie a few weeks ago at the theater. I found it very entertaining and informative. It took me to places in Greece that I would love to visit. Nia is funny, sexy and believable. In the year 2000 I went on a tourist bus tour of Europe and this movie surely brought back many fond memories. Every bus tour includes many diverse characters, with a believable love story, this makes it very entertaining. I have recommended this movie to all my friends. They should own it.The filming is exquisite showing the sites of Greece like a travelogue.I left the theater feeling as I had been thoroughly entertained.
