Let me start off by saying yes, I watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, but I'm not a die hard fan who watches every single episode. Now we got that out of the way, how good was Equestria Girls?
Well, the plot goes like this: Twilight Sparkle (who is now a princess like Luna and Celestia) gets her crown stolen by the antagonist Sunset Shimmer and escapes into another world. Twilight is determined to get her crown back and she goes into the other world, but when she arrives, everything is different. She's a young teenager (as well as everybody) and she must get her friends together once again to help her win the crown and go back to her world, but there are obstacles in the way, which she must overcome. That's basically the gist of it without giving any spoilers away.
Now, I enjoyed this film. It's animation is very good and smooth, the characters are likable, quirky, and there are good jokes. The cameos and in-jokes are a nice touch and they're not all over the place. The story is pretty basic and it's like the first episode of the first season to an extent, but what can you expect from a kid's film?
The only flaw in the film is the overabundance of songs. For a 72 minute film, there are a lot of songs in between scenes that seem too go on for a little long, but I think it's just to pad out the film's run time (in my opinion).
Overall, the film was good, but the songs were a little cheesy.
