"

A memoir of a girl's choice to leave childhood comforts behind to live in her adoptive country of Kenya.

Growing up in suburban Illinois, Robin Wiszowaty never pictured herself living with an impoverished Maasai family in rural Kenya. Yet in her early twenties Wiszowaty embarked on an incredible journey that would shake her from complacency, take her to unimaginable locales, and change her life forever. My Maasai Life follows Wiszowaty's remarkable voyage as she explores some of the most remote areas of East Africa and has her eyes opened to the diverse issues facing the fascinating Maasai people.

Review

"My Maasai Life is Wizowaty's account of growing up in bland, suburban Midwestern comfort and longing for a more vivid reality." (Vancouver Sun 2009-08-29)

"The family she lived with named her Naserian, 'Person of Peace.' The women taught her to make tea on a wood fire and to cook ugali (maize porridge) and cabbage. She learned to speak Swahili and a bit of the Maasai dialect. She formed a close bond with a neighbor, a young herdsman, who was going to school and supporting relatives while beating back poverty and disease. Wiszowaty lived as a Maasai daughter, lowering her head so the elders could touch it in greeting." (National Post 2009-09-09)

"Of all the things that Ms. Wizowaty found in the Kenyan savannah, peace is clearly the most important. Stark differences between cultures, customs, ways of life, between herself and her parents -- all concern about them seems to have evaporated in the African Sun." (Globe & Mail 2009-10-04)

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring story of a different way of life Aug 24 2009
Format:Paperback
My Maasai Life tells the story of Robin, a young woman who left behind all of her belongings, friends, and family and entered a world and culture so removed from anything she ever experienced. Robin spends a year living in a mud hut with a Maasai family. She learns Swahili and performs daily chores like collecting water and firewood, cooking, and cleaning. This memoir is beautifully written and provides readers a glimpse into the culture and way of life of the Maasai community/people in Africa. For anyone who ever wished to, or is planning on, a similar sort of adventure, this book is the perfect preview into the life you should expect to encounter.

Format:Paperback
This book should be available to every intermediate school classroom, as it demonstrates how one young woman who admits she was "not an ideal adolescent" and had a "rebellious urge" found the direction for her life in Kenya. Robin's book should also appeal to adult book clubs as it incorporates further discussion questions at the end. The telling of Robin's story weaves in the family values and the closeness and caring that is so powerful, and strength of Maasai rural society! A piece of my heart remains there.

This book should be mandatory reading for all high school students. Perfect for teenagers and adults. Robin introduces us to a different culture in a way that makes you envious not to be part of the experience.
